RALEIGH, N.C. – Bowie State University softball split a pair of non-conference matchups on Saturday during day two of the Shaw Lady Bears Challenge. The Lady Bulldogs roughed up Paine College 15-1 before falling 4-0 to Millersville University.
Sophomore
Nicoleen Ochoa (Madison, Ohio) along freshman
Tiffany Bearns (Lusby, Md.) and
Jaelyn Belt (Glen Burnie, Md.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with three hits each and combined for six runs. The Bowie State trio of senior
Danielle Watt (St. Leonard, Md.) and sophomores
Jacqueline Pickering (Bowie, Md.) and
Stefanie Ray (Damascus, Md.) tallied a pair of hits apiece. Senior
Caitlin O'Neill (Elkton, Md.) was credited with hit to round out Bowie State's 16 hits against Paine.
Bearns knocked in four RBI while Ray and Ochoa were responsible for three and two RBI respectively.
O'Niell no-hit the Lions with Paine's only run crossing the plate on a passed ball.
Bowie State and Millersville went scoreless over the first four innings before the Marauders' Mandy Hammond ripped a triple that scored Maria Spinosa. Millersville added to its 2-0 lead in the sixth on three consecutive doubles from Maggie Smith, Melanie Snyder and Spinosa.
Cassidy Pinchorski tossed seven innings, allowed three hits, struck out five and only allowed one walk on the bump versus the Lady Bulldogs.
Ochoa was responsible for two of Bowie State's hits in the nightcap while Pickering and Belt were credited with one hit each. Ray took the loss in the circle, giving up nine hits but she struck out eight along the way.
The Lady Bulldogs wrap up the Shaw Lady Bears Challenge weekend with a 12 noon contest against Tusculum tomorrow (3/6).
