CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Bowie State women's basketball erased a 12-point second quarter deficit but missed a golden opportunity, falling short to Johnson C. Smith by a score of 53-50. The loss sets the Bulldogs record at 7-3 overall and 0-1 in CIAA play.
Graduate student
Sade Chatman (Minneapolis, Minn.) along with senior
Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) paced Bowie State's Bulldogs with a team-high 12 and 10 points respectively. Chatman also hauled down a game-high 10 rebounds in the setback. Senior
Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) finished with eight points while
Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) and
Pere Alexander accounted for six points each.
Bowie State trailed Johnson C. Smith 34-26 at halftime and the Bulldogs shot 10-of-31 (32.2 percent) from the field in the first 20 minutes compared to 11-of-31 (35.5 percent) for the Golden Bulls.
The Bulldogs trimmed the Golden Bulls lead down to three twice, 44-41 and 46-43 on a Colston layups. And a 3-pointer by senior
Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) with 2:29 left in regulation tied the game at 46-all.
JCSU's Monique Hall made one of two free throws to shift the advantage back over to the Golden Bulls at 47-46.
Proctor gave Bowie State its first lead of the afternoon following a triple with 1:24 to go.
A Kendall Adams tip-in and free throw put Johnson C. Smith back up on top at 50-49 with 45 seconds remaining on the Brayboy Gymnasium scoreboard.
The Bulldogs turned the ball over on their next possession but so did the Golden Bulls on its next possession.
BSU's Chatman made one of two free throws to knot the score at 50 but JCSU's Asha Jordan sank one of two free throws to put Johnson C. Smith in front 51-50 with four seconds.
Bowie State had a chance to steal a win but came up empty on their end of the court.
Jordan sank a pair of free throws with 2.4 seconds left to seal the win for the Golden Bulls.
Johnson C. Smith (9-2 / 2-0 CIAA) was led by Jasmine Carter with 10 points to go along with six rebounds. Kendall Adams tallied nine points and six rebounds. The Golden Bulls trio of Monique Hall, Malia Rivers and Shanice Neita chipped in eight points apiece.
Bowie State women's basketball return to the hardwood on Monday (December 18th) at Winston-Salem (N.C.) State. Tip time in the C.E. Gaines Center is 5:30 p.m.
