Chatman’s Career Night Helps Bowie State Ground Chowan Hawks 71-63

BOWIE, Md. – Graduate student Sade Chatman (Minneapolis, Ind.) scored a career-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting and hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds to help the Bowie State Bulldogs ground the Chowan Hawks 71-65 in a key CIAA Northern Division matchup on Wednesday evening. With the win, Bowie State improves its season mark to 13-5 overall, 6-3 in league play and 1-2 in the CIAA North.
 
Freshman Talanya Hutton (Seat Pleasant, Md.) came up the Bulldogs bench to record a career-high 13 points via a perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the field and senior Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) tallied 10 points to go along with a game-high four assists. Senior Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) finished with eight points while fellow senior Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) wrapped up the night with seven points. Colston is 10 points away from joining the Bowie State Bulldogs' 1,000 Point Club. Sophomore Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) rounded out Bowie State's scorers with six points to go along with nine rebounds off the bench.
 
Bowie State held a 14-6 advantage after the first quarter. The Bulldogs made 10-of-25 first half field goals (40 percent) compared to 7-of-33 (21.2 percent) for Chowan and Bowie State carried a 33-18 lead into halftime. Of Bowie State's 33 first half points, 23 came from the Bulldogs bench.
 
The Bulldogs maintained a double-digit lead most of the third quarter with its largest lead of 16 coming at the 8:53 mark following a triple by Proctor.
 
Chowan did trim the Bowie State lead to nine twice and trailed 49-41 at the end of third quarter action. The Hawks outscored the Bulldogs 23-16 in the third quarter, hitting 8-of-19 field goals, which included one 3-pointer and 6-of-9 free throws.
 
Bowie State held a nine point cushion three times in the final quarter and had an 11-point lead with 2:27 remaining in the game. However, Chowan closed the deficit to two at 52-50 at the 7:59 mark of the fourth quarter, but that's as close as the Hawks would get.
 
The Bulldogs ended the contest with a field goal shooting percentage of 45.1 (23-of-51), which included 5-of-12 beyond the arc (41.7 percent) and Bowie State made 20-of-22 free throws for a season-high 90.9 percent.
 
Chowan's Hawks (14-4, 6-2 CIAA, 2-1 North) were led by Chantel Roberts' game-high 28 points to go along with eight rebounds and Dhyamond Crenshaw contributed 17 points and seven rebounds. Joanne Williams chipped grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, added nine points and a game-high five steals.
 
Bulldogs women's basketball head south this weekend, making a stop at Virginia State University for a 1 p.m. tipoff in the Multipurpose Center on the VSU campus.
