Bulldogs Men’s Basketball Battles to Defeat Augusta Jaguars 62-55

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State Bulldogs made it two wins is a row on Sunday (11/25) afternoon knocking off the Augusta (Ga.) Jaguars 62-55 in non-conference men's basketball action in the A.C. Jordan Arena. The win sets the Bulldogs record at 2-5 overall while Augusta drops to 3-2 overall.
 
Junior Juwun Smith pumped in career-high 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field, which included 5-of-6 beyond the arc to lead all players. Redshirt junior David Belle contributed 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field to go along with five rebounds, and junior Saiquan Jamison pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and added eight points, two blocks and one steal.
 
Bowie State held an early 4-0 advantage before Augusta ran off five straight to take its first lead at 5-4 at the 14:53 mark. BSU junior Cameron Hayes hit a jumper to shift the lead back over to the Bulldogs but Augusta answered with an 8-2 run to regain the lead at 13-8.
 
The Augusta Jaguars slowly pulled away from the Bulldogs and eventually held a 29-18 advantage with four minutes to go in the first half. However, Bowie State closed the first half with a 9-2 burst but went into intermission trailing 31-27.
 
The Bulldogs scored the first five points of the second half to regain the lead at 32-31, its first lead since early in the first half of play.
 
Augusta was able to pull even five times in the second half, but Bowie State picked up the defense and a deep triple by Smith pushed the Bulldogs in front for good at 49-46 with 8:15 remaining in the game. Bowie State's lead grew to nine (56-47) with 4:25 left in the contest and kept the Jaguars at bay for the rest of the afternoon.
 
The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Jaguars 40-34 and finished the game shooting 43 percent from the field (22-of-51), 46 percent behind the arc (6-of-13) and 12-of-18 (67 percent) at the free throw line.
 
The Jaguars were led by Darren Lucas-White with nine points while Tyree Myers and Miguel Arnold and Troy Cracknell chipped in seven points each in the loss.  Tyvez Monroe and Deane Williams were Augusta's leading rebounders with seven and six respectively.
 
As a team, Augusta finished the contest shooting 34 percent from the field (20-of-59), which included 7-of-21 (33 percent) behind the 3-point line and 50 percent (8-of-16) at the charity stripe.
 
Bowie State will hit the road for its next game, traveling to Erie, Pa. on Wednesday (November 28) to face Gannon University in a non-conference game beginning at 7 p.m.
