WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Bowie State University Bulldogs women had no trouble on Wednesday (12/10) evening at the University of the District of Columbia, blowing past the Firebirds by a score of 71-46. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 7-1 overall while the Firebirds dip to 3-6.

Shawnkia McCallum added 10 points each in the non-conference victory. Junior
Kyaja Williams contributed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs to go along with eight points, a pair of steals and a blocked shot. Calhoun ended the night with eight points (all in the first half) and freshman
Chyna Butler chipped in five points.
Bowie State jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first five minutes of the first quarter forcing UDC to call a timeout. Following the timeout, BSU's Calhoun drilled a 3-pointer followed by a backdoor layup by
Dynaisha Christian to push the advantage to 16-4 at the 3:35 mark. Bowie State maintained its intensity and held a 22-9 lead after one quarter of action.
By the under five-minute media timeout (4:33), Bowie State's lead was 30-17. UDC trimmed the deficit under ten (30-21) with 3:26 remaining in the second quarter but the Bulldogs pushed its lead back to a dozen (33-21) with just under three minutes to go in the first half and carried a 39-24 lead into halftime.
UDC closed the gap to 42-33 at the 4:13 mark of the third quarter following a baseline jumper by Maya Thomas. However, Bowie State outscored their opponent 12-3 the remainder of the quarter, giving the Bulldogs a 54-36 cushion heading into the final stanza.
The Firebirds (3-6) were led by Mia-Alexis Lloyd with 18 points and Thomas chipped in 13 points. Half of Lloyd's points came at the free throw as she knocked down 9-of-11.
As a team, Bowie State out-rebounded UDC 45-39, forced 28 Firebird turnovers that resulted in 22 points, held a 30-8 advantage in the paint and the Bulldogs bench outscored the Firebirds bench 36-13. In terms of shooting, Bowie State wrapped up the evening with field goal shooting percentage of 39 percent (22-of-57) and 79 percent form the charity stripe (23-of-29).
On the flip side, UDC's Firebirds shot a dismal 22 percent from the field (11-of-51) and hit 22-of-29 free throws (76 percent).
The Bulldogs open conference at home against the Winston-Salem State Rams on Sunday (December 16th) at 2 p.m. in BSU's A.C. Jordan Arena.
