Williams’ Double-Double Powers Bulldogs to 70-60 Win Over Livingstone

SALISBURY, N.C. - The Bowie State University women's basketball team kept its record unblemished on Monday (11/25) after taking down Livingstone College 70-60, improving to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in league play. Senior Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) recorded a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs in the win. Junior Talanya Hutton (Seat Pleasant, Md.) scored 14 points while seniors Amel Duggins (Largo, Md.) and Shawnkia McCallum (Baltimore, Md.) along with sophomore Chyna Butler (Syracuse, N.Y.) chipped in 10 points each.

Adel Allen pumped in a game-high 21 points and added six rebounds for the Lady Blue Bears while Darra Walker scored 16 points. Livingstone College is now 1-3 overall and 0-2 in CIAA.

The Bulldogs started the game going 6-0 from the floor thanks to senior Dynaisha Christian's (Pocomoke, Md.) four early points. The senior tallied nine points and pulled down five rebounds on the night. BSU led throughout the period and held the Lady Blue Bears with no field goals until Daijah Turner's jumper at the 6:57 mark. Livingstone fought back to cut the deficit down to 16-12 after Walker's 3-pointer but that was the closest they would get to the Bulldogs, who led by as many as nine points in the quarter.

The second quarter was the most impressive for the Bulldogs as the team took their largest lead of the game, 30-19 after Williams knocked down a pair of free throws with 6:12 remaining. From there, Bowie State never looked back as they took a 35-27 lead at halftime.

When asked about the keys to tonight's win, the sixth-year head coach Shadae Swan credited her team's defense saying, "We played really good defense and rebounded, while playing inside out."
During the third period, Livingstone's Blue Bears cut the Bowie State lead to six after Georgia Campbell and Allen jumpers, but the quarter belonged to the Bulldogs as Hutton's back-to-back baskets stretched the lead to 42-31 with 6:30 remaining. Bowie State allowed Livingstone to get back into the game late in the period after Allen's layup trimmed the lead to 48-43 before McCallum's triple ended the quarter with the Bulldogs up by seven.

Just like the first three quarters, the Bulldogs were on top again to begin the fourth period giving the Lady Blue Bears no shot of any comeback. The closest they would get to the lead was seven points, which came seconds before the final whistle. The Bulldogs shot 47 percent (25-of-53) from the floor, while holding the Lady Blue Bears to just 44 percent (22-of-50).

The Bulldogs return home to face the University of the District of Columbia on Wednesday (11/27). Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
