BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State University women's basketball team undefeated season continues on Wednesday (11/27) thanks to a 58-47 win over the University of the District of Columbia, moving to 4-0 on the year. Senior

UDC's Maya Thomas led all scorers with 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Tyra Coombs chipped in 10 points. The Firebirds record falls to 2-5 on the season.
The Bulldogs started the game scorching hot after going 12-0 in the first four minutes of the game and forcing six turnovers while doing so. The Firebirds first field goal didn't come until late first period when Coombs knocked down a three pointer at 2:22. A
Lea Whitehead (Odenton, Md.) jumper with 22 seconds remaining pushed the lead to 17-5 to end the quarter.
The second period was a different ball game as UDC fought back and held Bowie State to just seven points after scoring 17 in the opening quarter. After back-to-back field goals by Coombs and Halia Ellis, the Firebirds found themselves down to just 11 points at 7:08. The team also made several key stops and forced the Bulldogs to make turnovers. Thomas and Coombs orchestrated the Firebirds comeback by scoring three three's in the final 3:37 seconds to go into the half tied 24-24.
The Firebirds took its first lead of the game after Latavia Jackson's layup on the first possession of the third period before BSU's Hutton answered right back with a jumper of her own. The third-year Bowie State player has been in good form to begin the season, leading coach
Shadae Swan's team in scoring at 16.7 while shooting 60 percent from the floor. Williams, who had another unbelievable game filling up the stat sheets was a key cog once again tonight. The senior was three steals away from tying her career-high of 10 steals. After going on a 10-0 run early in the third, BSU gained control of the game again leading as much as seven points before Thomas hit another 3-pointer to trim the lead 35-31.
Jackson kick started the Firebirds to start the fourth quarter by scoring a layup, but the team would not have much success in the quarter as the Bulldogs clamped down on the visiting UDC Firebirds. Bowie State never seemed rattled when the Firebirds made their runs, staying the course and pulled away late. The team would go on to have their largest lead of the game at 15 points at the 8:47 mark in the period to close out the Firebirds. The Bulldogs struggled from the floor tonight after going 20-of-56 (35.7 percent) but were able to salvage another win. UDC's Firebirds went 19-of-47 (40.4 percent) in the evening and turned the ball over 25 times.
Bowie State returns to action at home on Saturday (11/30) in non-conference matchup against Gannon University. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
