In addition to their great defensive effort, the Bulldogs' offense was solid as well for a great overall performance. The Bulldogs held the Golden Knight to making just 16 field goals for the entire game. Offensively, Bowie State shot 40 percent (20-of-50) from the floor.
The Bulldogs took control of the game with a solid first half effort while holding a Gannon team to just 18 first half points, a side that were on a four game winning streak and averaging 72.9 points a game. First quarter was a low scoring period for both sides. Senior
Shawnkia McCallum's (Baltimore, Md.) three point shot at 3:57 ended a five-minute scoring drought. The senior drilled another three answering Chelsea Rourke's three on the other end. The Bulldogs would end the period with a 10-8 lead.
Williams' jumper got the Bulldogs rolling in the second quarter but both teams were still struggling to buy a basket early in the period. Duggins, who had her best game of the season on both side of the ball made a three pointer to stretch Bowie State's lead to 18-13 with 4:28 remaining. The Golden Knights answered back with a three point of their own but went into halftime trailing 22-18 to the Bulldogs.
Although the pace picked up in the third quarter, the back and forth continued as the Bulldogs were fighting to gain control of the game. Obenrader, the Golden Knights scoring leader kept her team in the ballgame making big shots when the Bulldogs made little runs. Her three pointer at 4:51 mark made the score 29-26 and after a BSU miss, McKinney's three tied the game. A Williams layup gave BSU the lead entering the fourth quarter.
It was in the fourth period when the Bulldogs really took control, building its largest lead of the game of 12 points after Hutton's layup made the score 44-38 with 5:49 left. Obenrader and Rourke's three pointers cut the deficit to just three, for a potential wire to wire finish. But the Bulldogs wouldn't let that happen as they went on a 5-0 run to push the lead to 10 with 1:51 remaining ending the Golden Knights hopes of spoiling Bowie State's undefeated start to the season. BSU held on to win their fifth consecutive game by the score of 58-46.
The Bulldogs will take its undefeated record on the road next week when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on Saint Augustine's University on Thursday (12/5). Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
