BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie State University softball picked up two much needed wins on Saturday afternoon, defeating visiting Lincoln (Pa.) University 9-1 and 10-3 at Jericho Park. The win pulls the Bulldogs northern division record even at 3-3, 6-7 in league play and 6-16 overall.
As a team the Bulldogs batted .414 with
Aseyah Alexander,
Kristina Hawke and
Madison Margas leading the team with four hits each of the doubleheader sweep. Hawke along with
Sierra Sims and
Jayla Pinkney drove in three RBI apiece while
Amya Ferguson pounded out three triples and recorded her first home run of the season.
Bowie State pitching held Lincoln (Pa.) to a batting average of .176 and allowed just nine hits over the two games with Hawke and
Morgan Powell picking up wins in the circle.
Game one started slow for both teams, but Bowie State scored first when
Sierra Sims scored from third on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
LUPA's DeeDee Irwin hit a leadoff single through the right side of the BSU defense to begin the 3rd inning and later scored via a hot short to short off the bat of Selena Mulet, tying the game at 1-all.
A Sims double to left pushed Margas and Bearns across the dish in Bowie State's share of the 3rd inning to shift the advantage back over to the Bulldogs at 3-1 for a lead they would not relinquish. Bowie State added a run the 4th inning, three runs in the 5th inning and ended game one by way of the 8-run mercy rule, scoring two in the 6th inning to account for the 9-1 victory.
Bowie State accounted for nine hits in game one with Ferguson, Sims and
Morgana Johnson leading the team with a pair of hits each.
The second game of the twin bill saw the Lincoln (Pa.) Lions take the early 1-0 lead courtesy of a pair of Bowie State errors in the opening frame.
Bowie State responded with five runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and tacked on two more in the bottom of the 2nd inning to open a 7-1 advantage over Lincoln (Pa.).
Two more BSU errors in the top of the 3rd inning aided in two more Lions runs, closing the Bulldogs lead to 7-3. However, Lincoln (Pa.) would get no closer the rest of the way.
Bowie State scored two runs in the bottom of the 4th inning but missed an opportunity to end the game in the 5th inning via the 8-run mercy rule. With one out, Hawke stroked a triple to left, followed by another triple to left by Gordon scoring Hawke. Bearns singled to short but Gordon could not advance home.
After a scoreless 6th inning, it was up to the Bowie State defense to wrap up the game in the top of the 7th inning and that they did The Bulldogs finished game two with 15 hits with Hawke and Alexander leading the way with three hits each.
Bowie State will be idle until returning to action on Saturday (April 13) hosting Elizabeth City State in another key CIAA North matchup against Elizabeth City State beginning at 1 p.m.
