Dynaisha Christian (Pocomoke, Md.) led the way for the Bowie State University Bulldogs with 15 points and a new career-high 19 rebounds to claim a 42-33 victory over the visiting Lady Bears of Shaw University. Junior
Talanya Hutton (Seat Pleasant, Md.) chipped in 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Win the conference win, the Bulldogs improve to 15-2 overall and 5-1 in the CIAA while the loss drops Shaw to 6-11, (2-7) in conference play.
The Bulldogs utilized a third-quarter break to capture the victory. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 27.6 percent (16-of-58) but made 91 percent of its free throws (10-of-11) in the game. Defensively, BSU forced 13 turnovers while Shaw shot 29.5 percent from the field (13-of-44) for the game.
Although Bowie State had 16-12 points in the paint advantage, both teams struggled to find their offensive groove early with BSU taking the first period 8-5. A combination of good defense and a lack of offense played a huge role in the low scoring quarter.
The second quarter saw another lackadaisical performance from both teams. The Shaw Lady Bears played better overall in the period, and outscored the Bulldogs 14-7 and went on a 7-0 run to close out the first half with a 19-15 lead at the break.
Bowie State came alive in the third frame with Hutton knocking down back-to-back jumpers to tie the game at 21-21 with 6:33 to go. A layup by senior
Kyaja Williams extended Bowie State's lead to 28-21 before Shaw's Dejoria Howard answered right back. The Bulldogs pushed its lead to eight in the period (32-24) at the 1:31 mark and outscored the Lady Bears 17-10 before ending the quarter up 32-26.
In a low scoring game, the Bulldogs did just enough to come away victorious in an important CIAA matchup. Freshman
Seanice Lyons' (Upper Marlboro, Md.) jumper gave BSU its biggest lead of the game at 40-29 with 2:32 remaining in the fourth period and cruised the rest of the way.
Tyra Sinclair was Shaw's leading scorer with 10 points and Dejora Howard along with Keyonte Cherry contributed nine and six points respectively. Diamonique Kennedy hauled down a team-high 10 rebounds and added five points in the loss.
The Bulldogs will return home for their next game playing host to Saint Augustine's University on Monday (1/20) at 4:00 p.m.
