BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State University (1-10) softball struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively its home softball debut on Saturday (2/29) afternoon, dropping a non-conference doubleheader to Bloomsburg University by scores of 14-0 and 12-2.
One bright spot for Bowie State was a double by freshman
Breanna Harvey (York, Pa.) in the second inning. Harvey led Bowie State University Bulldogs Varsity with one hit in two at bats.
Abby Wild earned the win in the pitcher's circle for the Bloomsburg Huskies. She surrendered no runs on one hit over five innings, striking out 12 and walked one on the opening contest.
Freshman
Seaaira Yiengst (Port Charlotte, Fla.) started the game for Bowie State's Bulldogs, allowed 13 hits over five innings and struck out one.
Game two sort of mirrored game one as the Bulldogs watched game two slip away early and couldn't recover in a 12-2 loss to the Huskies.
Bloomsburg's Tara Baney was given plenty of early offense as she went the distance in the circle. The junior righthander struck out eight and allowed only two hits - both of which came during the Bulldogs' two-run fifth inning.
Like game one, Erin DelPierre and Rebecca Rossi, again, created havoc at the top of the Huskies order. Both came around to score with DelPierre and Nicolette Ray providing first-inning hits.
The Huskies added four runs in the second as DelPierre, Rossi, Kelsey Impink, and Sammi Starr had four consecutive hits during the inning. Rossi scored again in the top of the third on a double from Impink as Bloomsburg built up a 7-0 lead through three.
In the fourth, Bloomsburg's Ashli Venokur and Paige Thomas started a four-run rally with back-to-back singles. Tyler White kept the inning alive - following a pair of outs - with a single that brought both runners home for a 9-0 advantage. DelPierre and Annika Gemberling reach on consecutive walks and then a costly error accounted for other two Huskies' runs in the frame.
Bloomsburg added a final run in the fifth on a run-scoring double by Thomas as she plated Venokur.
was in the circle for the Bulldogs and went three innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits, striking out one and walking one. Freshman
Mayumi Kinchen-Atkins (Homestead, Fla.) threw two innings in relief.
Sophomore
Shanya Gordon (Elkridge, Md) along with freshman
Karah Atkins (Homestead, Fla.) and Kinchen-Atkins all had one hit to lead Bowie State.
