Bowie State Bulldogs Softball Drops Pair to Shepherd Rams

BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State University (1-14) dropped a pair of home games in non-conference softball action on Wednesday (3/4) afternoon. The Bulldogs suffered a 29-5 setback to visiting Shepherd University in game one and dropped a 7-3 loss in the nightcap.   PHOTOS (Courtesy of Lawrence Johnson)

Sophomore center fielder Shanya Gordon (Elkridge, Md.) paced the Bulldogs with a .500 batting average in six plate appearances over the two games, recording a team-high three hits, which included a pair of doubles. Gordan also scored two runs and was responsible for three RBI.

Freshmen Karah Atkins (Homestead, Fla.) and Breanna Harvey (York, Pa.) tallied a pair of hits each for the Bulldogs while juniors Morgana Johnson and Morgan White, both of Baltimore (Md.) recorded one hit each over the twin bill.

In game one of the afternoon, the Shepherd Rams scored seven runs in the 1st inning, eight runs in the 2nd inning and nine runs in the 3rd inning and cruised the rest of the way to the lopsided victory.

The Bulldogs were able to plate five runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to avoid the shutout in the opening game. Bowie State managed four hits in game one with Gordan, Johnson, Atkins and Harvey responsible for one hit apiece.

Shepherd (3-3) pounded out 19 hits for the Rams in game one with Leann Brown along with Hannah Beeler responsible for a game-high three each.

Bowie State started game two much better, taking an early 2-0 lead after one inning of play. However, Shepherd took a 4-2 lead in the top of the 2nd inning and added three more runs in the top of the 3rd inning to give the Rams a 7-2 cushion they would not relinquish.

BSU's Gordon stroked a double to right center in the bottom of the 7th inning, scoring junior Aseyah Alexander (Silver Spring, Md.) all the way from first. Unfortunately, Gordon was tagged out at third trying to stretch her double into a triple and ended the nightcap at 7-3.

Of Shepherd's primary players, Brown, Hannah Beeler, Nicole Purtell and Daisy Adams racked up four hits each in the sweep for the Rams.

The Bulldogs hit the road for a three-day (3/13-15) CIAA Round-Up hosted by Elizabeth City State. Bowie State will open the Round-Up against Winston-Salem State on Friday (3/13) with the first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m., weather permitting.
