RICHMOND, Va.– The Bowie State University women's volleyball team put together one their best matches of the season but fell 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 28-26, 20-25, 11-15) in a thrilling Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) division match against Virginia Union University at Barco Stevens Gymnasium Thursday night.
The Bulldogs fall to 1-12 (0-6 CIAA) with the loss, while the Lady Panthers improve to 2-7 (1-5 CIAA) with Thursday's win.
Bowie State was led by junior Lydia Leiner with 11 kills, followed by junior Madison Marshall (Albany, NY) and freshman Kyznia Jessup (Woodbridge, VA) with 10 and nine kills, respectively. Graduate student Christiana DuBose (Bowie, MD) posted a career-high 10 a service aces while senior Bianca Tucker (Edgewood, MD) garnered a match-high 37 assists.
Defensively, Leiner recorded a team-high 20 digs while sophomore Neysha Washington (Winchester, VA) and sophomore Jurnee Stuckey (Houston, TX) collected 19 and 12 digs, respectively.
BSU charted a season-high 48 kills (.053), outscoring VUU 71-61 in points and an 18-8 advantage in service aces but the Bulldogs also committed 37 errors including 11 twice in the third and fourth sets.
The fifth set went back-and-forth between the two teams until two kills from the Lady Panthers forced BSU to call a timeout as they trailed 13-11. Coming out of break, VUU tallied another kill forcing the Bulldogs to call another timeout but Virginia Union picked up the win on a miscue from Bowie State that would give them the 3-2 edge.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Monday, Oct. 11 for a home match against Shaw at 6 p.m. inside A.C. Jordan Arena.
