Bulldogs Win Home Opener Against Wilmington, 52-44

BOWIE, Md. – Sunday night in A.C. Jordan Arena, the Bowie State women's basketball team took down Wilmington, 52-44. The Bulldogs outshot WU, 15-7 in the second quarter and never gave up the lead the rest of the way. With the win Bowie State improves to 1-2 overall while Wilmington falls to 0-3.

The win also marks the 18th straight home game victory for the Bulldogs who went a perfect 15-0 in A.C. Jordan Arena during the 2019-20 season. The last time BSU lost at home was in during the 2018-19 season against Virginia State, 53-51.

BSU scored the game's first points with an easy two for sophomore Robyn Howard (Temple Hills, MD) and then a jumper from senior Talanya Hutton (Seat Pleasant, MD) in the first three minutes of play. The Wildcats tied twice until they took their first lead of the game on a jumper that gave them the 12-11 edge at the end of the quarter.

The Bulldogs began the second quarter on a 9-0 run, controlling momentum with a 20-12 lead. Defensively, the Bulldogs held the Wildcats to four points for the remainder of the quarter as BSU owned a 24-19 lead at halftime.

Coming out in the third, Wilmington clawed its way back using a 9-6 scoring margin but the Bulldogs would go on to stretch its lead to eight when Hutton hit a 15-footer with 3:12 left. BSU would close out the quarter with a jumper from redshirt freshman Katerra Myers (Burtonsville, MD) to make it 38-32.

In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs led by as many as 10 points when junior Drew Calhoun (New Carrollton, MD) connected from long range with 8:26 to play. Bowie State's lead would come down to five but a jumper from Hutton put the game away for BSU.

Myers led the way with 15 points and six rebounds, she was 5-of-8 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Hutton followed with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds while Calhoun chipped in nine points and seven bards.

Bowie State will return to action Sunday, Nov. 28 against Goldey-Beacom in A.C. Jordan Arena. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
