KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Bowie State men's basketball went down to the wire with Kutztown, but ultimately fell 81-78 Wednesday night at Keystone Arena.
The Bulldogs (1-8) almost completed a late comeback behind junior Quinton Drayton (Bowie, MD) and his game-high 22 points. Sophomore David McCullough (Bowie, MD) finished with 19 points, six rebounds and three steals on 8-for-13 shooting while freshman Kyree Freeman-Davis (Bowie, MD) aided 12 points off the bench.
Both teams played even most of the first half until the Bears sunk two free throws that would lead to Kutztown grooming a 11-2 run to take a 44-34 lead at halftime.
Kutztown scored five unanswered points to start the second half until Drayton went on a 5-0 run by himself to cut the Bulldogs deficit to single digits with 17:22 left to play. Bowie State continued to plow away at the Bears lead and got within one (61-60) after a layup again from Drayton.
The Bulldogs would take their first lead of the game when Drayton and McCullough combined for 13 points, for a 71-69 edge but that would be short lived as Kutztown hit a jumper that would regain the lead for the Bears with 2:06 remaining in regulation. Although Bowie State continued to fight led by Drayton who registered five of the Bulldogs last seven points, Kutztown produced a 10-7 scoring margin to secure the win over BSU.
Bowie State will return home when the Bulldogs play host to Shippensburg on Sunday, Dec. 12. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. from A.C. Jordan Arena.
