Bowie, Md. – The Bowie State University volleyball team will begin its 2021 season on the road at Delaware State University on Tuesday, Sept. 7. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. from Memorial Hall.
Last season in 2019, Bowie State volleyball ended their season with the record 6-18 overall. Current members such as sophomore and libero Neysha Washington (Winchester, VA) led the team last season with 333 digs (4.38 digs per set), while junior and outside hitter Madison Marshall (Albany, NY) collected 190 digs for a team's second best to go along with 10 total blocks. Senior setter Oladia Menchaca (Landover, MD) was beneficial to the team with her 133 assists last season.
Despite not having a season in 2020 due to a global pandemic, the team welcomed four freshmen to the team, including Regan Amos (Reisterstown, MD), Kyznia Jessup (Woodbridge, VA), Jacey Lewis (Windsor Mill, MD), and Abrielle Scrivner (Odenton, MD). Additionally, the Bulldogs welcome one redshirt sophomore in Dasia Wade (Baltimore, MD).
Under the leadership of head coach Zaronda Watson in her third season at the helm.
Delaware State is 5-1 on the 2021 season. The Hornets are coming off a 3-0 win against Saint Peter's on Sept. 4. DSU is averaging 14.9 kills per set (.289 percent), 13.9 assists per set and 14.5 digs per set in six matches played. Alondra Maldonado leads the way with 71 kills, while Alayna Lacy has 117 assists and Valeria Otero has grabbed 66 total digs in six matches.
Following Tuesday's match, the Bulldogs will host Golden-Beacom for their home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. from A.C. Jordan Arena.
