Big Second Half Lifts Bulldogs Past Virginia Union, 65-56

BOWIE, Md. – A strong 23-5 push in the third quarter is what the Bowie State women's basketball team needed as the Bulldogs earned a home victory over Virginia Union, 65-56 on Wednesday night from A.C. Jordan Arena in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division action.

With the win, Bowie State improve to 5-7 overall, 3-2 in the CIAA and 1-1 in the North while Virginia Union dips to 3-7 on the year, 2-3 in the league and 0-2 in the division.

Senior Talanya Hutton (Seat Pleasantville, MD) led the way with 19 points and one rebound shy from a double-double with nine total on the night, including seven offensively while junior Drew Calhoun (New Carrollton, MD) recorded 14 points on 3-of-6 shooting from downtown. Freshman Katerra Myers (Burtonsville, MD) would round out the double digit scoring for the Bulldogs with 12 points and five rebounds.

The Bulldogs got off to a slow start, trailing the Lady Panthers 7-2 before a jumper from Hutton ignited a 6-2 scoring spread – pulling Bowie State within one (7-6) with 6:50 on the game clock. The game tied at 12-even at the 3:17 mark but VUU outscored BSU 7-3 to take a 19-17 edge at the end of the first quarter.

After a cold shooting performance in the second quarter, hitting just 3-of-16 field goals for 18-percent – Virginia Union led by as many as 13 points with 4:09 left in the first half. A 3-pointer from freshman Jazmine Washington (Colombia, MD) snapped the scoring drought for BSU but the Bulldogs trailed the Lady Panthers 35-27 at intermission.

Things turned around for Bowie State in the second half as the Bulldogs scored eight-straight points to tie the game at 35-even with 6:43 left in the third quarter. BSU then took the lead when Calhoun drilled back-to-back 3-pointers – in fact, she scored nine-straight before the Bulldogs began raining 3-pointers to close out the quarter with a 50-40 lead.

Bowie State swelled to a lead of 18 (58-40) after scoring eight unanswered points to start the fourth quarter and never looked back.

The Bulldogs outscored the Lady Panthers 24-14 in the paint, 17-8 in second chances and tallied 24 points off of VUU's 20 turnovers.

Bowie State will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 22 when the Bulldogs make a trip to Raleigh, N.C. to face Shaw at 2 p.m. Following Saturday's tilt, BSU will take on Saint Augustine's in a makeup contest on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m.
