About the Bulldogs
The Bulldogs are on a two game winning streak after knocking off the No. 7 Virginia Union Panthers Wednesday night inside A.C. Jordan Arena. BSU had one of their best offensive games on the year, credit also goes to BSU's effort on the defensive end as they were able to limit a VUU team that averaged 75 points per game – a conference best to just 61 points on the night while out-rebounding the Panthers 31-30 on the glass. Graduate senior Tyler Jones (Pleasantville, NJ) led with 16 points while graduate senior Kobby Ayetey (Accra, Ghana) chipped in 13 points and six rebounds.
Bowie State is fourth in the CIAA in scoring (72.7) while their opponents have scored 78.9 points which ranks 12th in the conference. Jones is the team's leading scorer (11.4 ppg) and rebounder (4.1).
Scouting Shaw
The Bears enter Saturday's game on a two game win-streak as well, coming off a 63-60 win at Virginia State Wednesday. Corey Rutherford had 17 points while Nakwan Kitchens added 10 points off the bench in the winning effort.
As a team, Shaw is seventh in the CIAA for scoring (69.1) while defensively they are sixth in the league allowing 72.3 points per game. Caleb Simmons averages 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game to lead the Bears in scoring and rebounds.
The Series
Bowie State has won nine of the last 15 games against Shaw. The last time the Bulldogs and Bears met was on Jan. 18 in Bowie, Md., that featured a dominating 96-67 performance and win for BSU stretching their win-streak to three straight against Shaw. Currently, Bowie State is atop in the Northern Division while Shaw is second – both teams are 2-0 in the North. A win for BSU would put the Bulldogs in the driver seat for first in the division.
Scouting Saint Augustine's
The Falcons stand 2-6 at home this season after falling to Johnson C. Smith 69-61 on Jan. 19. Dhashon Dyson led all scorers with 24 points in the loss. SAU has lost its last six games entering Sunday's competition.
Offensively, the Falcons are ninth in the CIAA in scoring (67.1) while defensively, SAU is eight in defense – allowing opponents to score 75.3 points per game. Dyson is the top scorer for the Falcons with 21.3 points per game while Spencer Washington has a team-high 7.6 rebounds per outing.
The Series
Bowie State and Saint Augustine's will meet for the 18th time since the 2008-2009 season. The Bulldogs have won 11 games in that span and have won the last four games against the Falcons, including a 65-59 in Bowie, Md. on Jan. 20, 2020.
