Bowie State to Host Chowan on Saturday in Football Action

BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State football will meet the Hawks of Chowan University on Saturday, Oct. 22 for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division contest and Breast Cancer Awareness. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. from Bulldog Stadium.

Game tickets are available here. General admission is $25 with youth age 5 and under FREE. Invited groups of 20 for ages 10-16 is FREE with a paid adult ticket however should be approved by Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation, Clyde Doughty, Jr. in advance.
 
Game Promotions
  • Bowie State Athletics will host its annual Breast Cancer Awareness game versus Chowan on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
  • Fans will be encouraged to wear pink in support of Prince George's Goes Pink collaboration between the county government and various community partners and organizations dedicated to serving those impacted by breast cancer. The Series
Bowie State is 8-3 all-time against Chowan dating back to 2010. The Bulldogs have won the last meetings against the Hawks including last year's 14-3 road victory on Oct. 9, 2021. Of Chowan's three wins against Bowie State, two of the wins occurred in Bulldog Stadium.
 
Last Timeout for Bowie State
Bowie State suffered a heartbreaking 27-24 overtime setback to the No. 10 Virginia Union Panthers last weekend at home. The Panthers snapped the Bulldogs 22-home game regular season win-streak as the Bowie State suffered a loss the first time since 2017 in Bulldog Stadium. Bowie State tallied 373 yards of total offense (303 passing, 70 rushing) while the Panthers registered 393 yards of total offense on 145 passing and 248 rushing. The Bulldogs accounted for seven penalties for 65-yards compared VUU's 13 penalties (123-yards). Graduate senior Dion Golatt, Jr. (Largo, MD) completed 30-of-44 passes for 303-yards but was sacked five times while redshirt sophomore Sam Doku (Silver Springs, MD) recorded a team-best 25 rushing yards on 11 carries and a TD. Redshirt junior Keshane Hinckley (Laurel, MD) charted 11 catches for 97-yards to lead the receiving unit.

As for the Bulldogs defense, redshirt freshman Jadon Carter (Bryans Road, MD) led the way with a career-high eight tackles while redshirt sophomore Kennypride Toh (Silver Spring, MD) posted a career-high six tackles and two tackle for losses. Redshirt junior Uvel Paul, Jr. (Severn, MD) added six tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss to round out the top defenders statistically for Bowie State.
 
BSU's Individual Leaders
Golatt, Jr. has been the number one quarterback for Bowie State this season. He has 1,929 passing yards which ranks 10th in DII with 13 TDs on 155 completions. He leads the CIAA in passing yardage, passing TDs and passing efficiency (146.2).
 
The Bulldogs receiving unit has been led by Hinckley who has 45 receptions for 543 yards and three touchdowns – he is second amongst the CIAA with 79.0 average per game but is first in receptions per game (6.7), receptions and yards. On the ground, Doku has 89 rushes for 361 yards and four TDs this season. His longest rush was for 33-yards while averaging 51.67 per outing. He's sixth in the league in regards to yards, carries and TDs scored.
 
Defensively, BSU's top tackler is both redshirt senior Joshua Pryor (Baltimore, MD) and redshirt sophomore Sadiq Salawu (Upper Marlboro, MD) with 32 tackles apiece. Pryor has a team-high seven tackle for losses (40-yards), 3.5 sacks (30-yards), two forced fumbles and QB hurries to go along with a breakup. Salawu accounts for four tackle for losses (11-yards) and two breakups through seven games. Additionally – Paul, Jr. is fourth in the CIAA for total sacks with five total on the year, which is a team-high.
 
Bowie State averages 29.5 points per game while holding its opponents to 20.71.

CIAA Weekly Honors
For the first time this season both Hinckley and Carter of Bowie State football received selections on the CIAA Football Weekly Honors ballot announced by the league office Monday.

Hinckley was named the CIAA receiver of the week after a game-high 11 receptions for 97-yards performance during the Bulldogs overtime setback to No. 10 Virginia Union Saturday.  Six of the redshirt junior's 11 catches were for first downs, including three third-down catches that moved the chains and his longest reception was 21 yards. Hinckley's 11 catches were a career-high. Carter received his first career CIAA weekly honor as this week's defensive back of the week. Carter recorded game-high and career-high totals of seven solo stops and eight total tackles. The redshirt freshman forced a Panthers' punt with a tackle on 3rd-and-15. Carter also was credited with a pass breakup.


The CIAA Northern Division
Amongst the CIAA Northern Division standings, VUU remains atop at 7-0 overall, 5-0 in the CIAA and 2-0 while Chowan stands 4-3 overall, 4-1 in the CIAA and 2-0 in the North. As for Bowie State, the Bulldogs are 1-1 in the North but a win over Chowan could tie with the Hawks for second place in the division standings.
 
The Polls
Bowie State has been unranked nationally since Week 3's loss to Shaw (17-13) within the American Football Coaches Association Poll (AFCA) Division II – the Bulldogs recently fell out of the BOXTOROW Media Poll with the loss to Virginia Union but was voted No. 7 on the HBCU DII Coaches Poll powered by BOXTOROW.
 
Last Timeout for the Hawks
Chowan defeated Virginia State for the first time in Murfreesboro after going 0-5 since 2010. Rashad McKee collected 119 yards through the air and 139 yards on the ground for the Hawks.  Jordaan Bailey added 61 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while catching two passes for 49 yards. Nijere Peoples added 60 yards on the ground with two scores.
Montre Moore had 14 tackles to lead the Hawks.  Jamae Blank tallied 3.0 TFLs and a forced fumble.  Nic Wilson forced a fumble allowing Cameron Rampersaud to recover.  Kmare Carey collected his fourth interception of the season. Jake Ray was 5-5 on PATs, while Patric Talbot posted his longest punt of the season with a 58-yard punt.
Chowan rushed for 273 yards and five touchdowns.
 
Chowan
The Hawks (4-3, 4-1 CIAA) travel to Bowie, Md., with winning momentum. Chowan started the season slow falling in back-to-back games to Barton (17-3) and Tusculum (23-21) before earning its first win of the season against Johnson C. Smith (32-29) at home on Sept. 17. Since the first victory of the season – the Hawks have won four of its last five games and own a two-game win-streak entering Saturday's contest.
 
CU's offense is not like in year's past with standout quarterback Bryce Witt gone. The Hawks are sixth in the league in scoring (20.9) while its opponents have averaged 20.4 (fourth in the CIAA). The rushing game for the Hawks has been the most effective with Nijere Peoples leading the way with 424 yards on 89 carries – he's fifth in the CIAA as the team is third in the league as a team (166.7 yards per game).

Bowie State will travel to Elizabeth City, N.C. to face the Vikings of ECSU in CIAA division action on Saturday, Oct. 29. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
