RALEIGH, N.C. – The Bowie State women's volleyball team fought a very talented Shaw University team in the third set but the Bulldogs suffered three-straight losses to the Lady Bears by the scores of 6-25, 9-25 and 22-25 Monday night inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The loss dips the Bulldogs to 6-6 overall and 3-4 in league action while the Lady Bears improve to 10-6 overall and 6-0 in the CIAA.
Bowie State was held to six points in the opening set after hitting -.130 from the floor and just two kills. The Bulldogs then tacked on five kills in the second set for a hitting percentage of -.037 but BSU only accounted for nine points in the frame.
However, in the third set – Bowie State raced out to a 6-2 lead thanks to a block from graduate senior Kendal Hoges (West Orange, NJ) and sophomore Kyznia Jessup (Woodbridge, VA) but the Lady Bears used a 9-1 run to gain the lead capped by a service ace. The lead changed two more times before Shaw groomed an 11-8 scoring margin down the stretch to come away with the set win.
Junior Neysha Washington (Winchester, VA) collected a match-high 12 digs while graduate senior Jailyn Ivey (Bowie, MD) had five kills and three digs and junior Lindsey Grossman (Albany, OR) contributed seven assists and three digs.
Bowie State returns to action Saturday, Oct. 8 in the CIAA Round-Up hosted by both Saint Augustine's and Shaw. The Bulldogs will take on Claflin (10/8) at 1 p.m. and then Fayetteville State (10/9) and Livingstone (10/9) at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
