Bowie State Football Hits the Road for Division Opener at Virginia State

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State Bulldogs and the Virginia State Trojans will meet on the gridiron Saturday, Oct. 8 for its Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division opener at 4 p.m. from Rogers Stadium in Ettrick, Va. PRC Communications will broadcast the game live on CW local listings. The game can also be found on the CIAA Sports Network.

THE SERIES
Saturday's game marks the 35th meeting between the two teams. Virginia State owns a 21-13 all-time record against Bowie State dating back to 1976. The Bulldogs are 8-9 at home against the Trojans but 5-12 on the road. BSU won the last matchup against VSU, 51-44 on Oct. 16, 2021 in Bowie, Md. The last 10 matchups between the two teams have resulted in a 5-5 split. However, Bowie State has won the last three outings.
 
LAST TIMEOUT
Bowie State (3-2, 2-1 CIAA) toppled Livingstone College on Saturday, Oct. 1 by the score of 53-7 for Homecoming. A high-powered offense from the Bulldogs that featured 666 total yards – the most this season and fourth all-time including 465 through the air (now second all-time in program history) and 201 highlighted the game on the ground. Six different Bulldogs scored a touchdown during the game led by graduate senior Dion Golatt, Jr. who set a new program record for the passing yards in a game with 439-yards against LC. Golatt, Jr. passed former Bowie State standout Amir Hall who previously held the record for most yards in a game at 433 yards.
 
The Largo, Md., native completed 32-of-40 passes, four TDs and two interceptions on the afternoon while redshirt sophomore Sam Doku (Silver Springs, MD) rushed for 77-yards on 13 carries and a touchdown and redshirt junior Kwincy Hall (Washington, D.C.) caught 10 passes for 120-yards and a TD.
 
Redshirt sophomore Sadiq Salawu (Upper Marlboro, MD) led the defense with six tackles and a tackle for loss while redshirt sophomore Mekhi Williams (Springdale, MD) redshirt junior Uvel Paul, Jr. (Severn, MD) both contributed five tackles apiece as Paul, Jr. recorded two sacks (15-yards) and 2.5 tackle for loss.

Bowie State led 35-0 at halftime and never looked back. The Blue Bears lone score came from an 83-yard interception.

ATTACK THROUGH THE AIR
Bowie State is first in the CIAA with 1533 yards through the air led by Golatt, Jr. who has 1,384 passing yards on the sea­son, which also ranks first in the CIAA and 11th in the nation. He is 23rd amongst DII in passing efficiency (148.64).

BOWIE STATE'S DEFENSE THROUGH CIAA & DII
After going from one of the most domi­nant defenses in the nation in 2021, the Bulldogs may not lead the nation in de­fensive TDs this season however; they are still active in the nation. BSU is ninth in total defense (242.8 yards per game), 11th in third down conversion percentage (.500) and 16th in DII for fourth down conversion percentage defense (.222).
 
Redshirt senior Joshua Pryor (Baltimore, MD) is still the anchor of the Bulldogs defense; he has 26 tackles (10 solo), 5.0 (28-yards) tackle for losses, 2.5 sacks (19-yards), two pressures, a forced fum­ble and a break up. Junior Uvel Paul, Jr. (Severn, MD) is the sack leader for BSU's defense with 3.0 on the year, which is seventh in the league.  
 
CLICKING OFFENSIVELY
The rushing game for Bowie State is fi­nally starting to pick up this season led by Doku who has a team-high 299 yards on 64 carries and three TDs. He is third in the CIAA averaging 59.8 yards per game. Hinckley has caught 29 passes for 371 yards and a TD; he is third in the CIAA while Hall is second in the CIAA with 27 receptions against confer­ence opponents (266 yards).

CIAA WEEKLY HONORS
Bowie State football had three Bulldogs named to this week's CIAA Football Player of the Week Honors. Quinton Bobo was named the CIAA's Offensive Lineman of the Week, Golatt, Jr. was named the CIAA's Quarterback of the Week and Hall was voted as the CIAA's Receiv­er of the Week.  
 
THE POLLS
Bowie State fell out of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) DII National rankings and the D2Football.com Top-25 list with the loss to Shaw in Week 3. Since, the Bulldogs remained ranked in the BOXTOROW Media Poll, HBCU DII Coaches Poll and HBCU GameDay's DII Football Poll. This week, the Bulldogs remained the same in both the DII Coaches and Media Poll at No. 6 and No. 9.

VIRGINIA STATE TROJANS
VSU is 4-1 and 3-0 in the CIAA entering Saturday's game. The Trojans came from behind for a 28-24 win at home against the Bears of Shaw last Saturday. VSU trailed the Bears, 24-21 after three quarters but scored on a go-ahead TD with seven seconds remaining for the game winner by Jordan Davis.

The Trojans offense is third in the league, averaging 30.8 points and their defense allows its opponents just 16.6 points per game, which is third in the CIAA. Notably, Darius Hagans is second in the CIAA for 97 carries and 580 rushing yards this season with three TDs. VSU's Davis is sixth in the league having completed 45 passes on 79 attempts (57%) for 738-yards and six touchdowns. Tylique Ray is fourth in the league with 15 catches for 312 yards and two TDs for an average of 20.8 catches and 62.4 yards per outing. Willie Drew is atop in the CIAA with four interceptions on the season while Zion John[1]son has forced two fumbles (1st in CIAA). Johnson is the Trojans top defender with 34 tackles (6.8 per game).
 
Virginia State named Dr. Henry Frazier, III its 26th head football coach on May 10, 2022. Frazier, III previously served on the coaching staff at Bowie State from 2017-2019 and was a part of the Bulldogs conference championships in 2018 and 2019 as well NCAA playoff appearances. He also served as the head coach for Bowie State from 1999-2022, earning a CIAA Eastern Division title and CIAA championship appearance.
