BOWIE, MD --The Bowie State women's basketball team scored 30 points off of turnovers on the way to a 78-52 win against the Shepherd Rams at home Wednesday.
Katerra Myers led the Bulldogs (2-1) with eight points and nine rebounds. Seanice Lyons also added 13 points and Jayla Irvin helped out with six points and two steals off the bench.
Bowie State collected 55 rebounds in Wednesday's game compared to Shepherd's 38, led by Myers' nine boards. The Bulldogs also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 29 rebounds into 22 second chance points.
Bowie State forced 25 Shepherd turnovers while committing only eight themselves in Wednesday's game. The Bulldogs turned those takeaways into 30 points on the other end of the floor. Irvin's two steals led the way for Bowie State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 8-4, Bowie State went on a 10-0 run with 6:39 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Anii Harris, to take a 14-8 lead. The Bulldogs then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 19-10 advantage. Bowie State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
Bowie State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 10-0 run starting at the 7:22 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Irvin, to increase its lead to 31-12. The Rams cut into that lead, but the Bulldogs still enjoyed a 37-22 advantage heading into halftime.
Bowie State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on an 8-0 run to expand its lead further to 49-32 with 5:07 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Bulldogs added 10 points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 66-39 edge. Bowie State took advantage of 12 Shepherd turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of takeaways.
Bowie State kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Shanysse Alexander's layup, to grow the lead to 75-41 with 6:29 to go in the contest. The Rams narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bulldogs still cruised the rest of the way for the 78-52 win.
