All-Around Team Effort Leads the Bulldogs Past Johnson C. Smith, 62-48

CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Bowie State women's basketball team held Johnson C. Smith to just 15.4 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-13 shooting performance on the way to a 62-48 victory over the Golden Bulls (4-5, 0-1 CIAA) on the road Saturday in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action. 

The Bulldogs (6-4, 2-0 CIAA) had two players score in double figures, led by sophomore Anii Harris (Ellicott City, MD), who had 15 points and three steals. Junior Jayla Irvin (Alexandria, VA) added 10 points off of the bench and sophomore Saniha Jackson (Ellicott City, MD) added nine points and eight rebounds.

Led by sophomore Katerra Myers' (Burtonsville, MD) three offensive rebounds, Bowie State pulled down 15 offensive rebounds hat resulted in 14 second chance points.

Bowie State's defense held Johnson C. Smith to only 30.8-percent shooting from the field, including 15.4-percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

After falling behind 7-4, Bowie State went on an 11-0 run with 3:08 left in the first quarter to take a 15-7 lead. The Bulldogs then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-9 advantage. Bowie State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 15 points.

BSU kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 9:47 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Harris, to increase its lead to 22-9. The Golden Bulls cut into that lead, but the Bulldogs still enjoyed a 30-21 advantage heading into halftime.

Bowie State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from freshman Khalia Turner (Baltimore, MD) to expand its lead further to 39-27 with 2:13 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Golden Bulls had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Bulldogs still entered the fourth quarter with a 44-33 edge. BSU knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 14 total points.

Bowie State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by graduate senior Jazmyne Scott's (Brooklyn, MD) layup, to grow the lead to 59-45 with 3:10 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 62-48 win.
