WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Bowie State women's basketball team came up short in a 54-48 loss to the Winston-Salem State Rams on the road Monday night in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action.
The Bulldogs (6-5, 2-1 CIAA) had three players score in double figures, led by Seanice Lyons (Upper Marlboro, MD), who had 13 points and two steals. Katerra Myers (Burtonsville, MD) tacked on 10 points and two steals off of the bench and Anii Harris (Ellicott City, MD) chipped in as well with 10 points and two steals.
Bowie State forced 23 Winston-Salem State turnovers while committing 21 themselves. The Bulldogs turned those takeaways into 11 points on the offensive end of the floor. Saniha Jackson's (Ellicott City, MD) four steals led the way for BSU.
How It Happened
After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Bowie State went on a 7-0 run with 6:23 left in the first quarter to take a 9-2 lead. WSSU then responded to tie things up at 11-11 heading into the second quarter.
The Rams then took control in the second quarter and the Bulldogs entered halftime behind 28-20.
Bowie State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Bulldogs faced a 40-29 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Bowie State played well near the basket, scoring six of its nine points in the paint.
Winston-Salem State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 47-34 advantage before BSU went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 47-40 with 2:35 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs kept their comeback going, but WSSU managed to hold on for the 54-48 win. Bowie State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
