Defensive Effort Leads Bulldogs over Wilmington, 73-30

BOWIE, MD --Bowie State held Wilmington (DE) to an 18.8 shooting percentage from the field and the Bulldogs won 73-30 over the Wildcats (0-7) at home Sunday.

The Bulldogs (4-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Sophomore Anii Harris, who had 16 points and six rebounds. Junior Jayla Irvin added 15 points and three steals and Freshman Saniha Jackson helped out with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Led by Jackson's five offensive rebounds, Bowie State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in 14 second chance points.

Bowie State's defense held Wilmington (DE) to only 6.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 18.8 percent from the field. The Bulldogs also limited one of Wilmington's leading scorers Trinity Brittingham to 1-of-9 shooting from downtown and seven points in the game.

How It Happened

Bowie State started out the scoring by going on a 13-0 run, culminating in a three-pointer from Junior Seanice Lyons, to take an early lead with 5:27 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 20-6 advantage. Bowie State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 20 points.

Bowie State built that first quarter lead to 27-12 before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 2:10 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from freshman Mia Smith, to increase its lead to 35-12, a score that would hold until halftime.

Bowie State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 14-0 run, punctuated by a three from Irvin, to expand its lead further to 54-17 with 4:29 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Bulldogs added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 59-21 edge. Bowie State knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 24 total points.

Bowie State started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Freshman Abigail Bailey's layup, to grow the lead to 66-21 with 7:19 to go in the contest. The Wildcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bulldogs still cruised the rest of the way for the 73-30 win.
