Bulldogs Put Scare into No. 13 Augusta, Falls 73-70

AUGUSTA, GA --The Bowie State men's basketball team was a pair of friendly bounces away from pulling off a monumental upset, but both a last second and point eight of a second shot rimmed out and No. 13 Augusta (6-1) survived at home, 73-70 on Thursday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (2-8) had three players score in double figures, led by junior Mark Bradshaw (Chester, PA), who had 17 points and three steals. Junior Joel Webb (Forestville, MD) tacked on 13 points and eight rebounds and freshman Jacory Wilkes (Silver Spring, MD) helped out with 12 points from the bench.

Led by Wilkes' three offensive rebounds, the Bulldogs pulled down 10 offensive boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.

BSU forced 18 Augusta turnovers while committing 13 themselves. The Bulldogs turned those takeaways into 26 points on the other end of the floor. Freshman Amare Wimbush (Landover, MD) registered three steals in the setback.

How It Happened

Bowie State competed very well against the Jag's in the opening half, taking a 8-5 lead in the first four minutes of action. The lead changed 19 times before Augusta held a 13-point lead off a 3-pointer with 2:38 left in the first half. The Bulldogs cut the deficit to single digits on a 5-0 run but the Jag's hit three straight free throws to lead 42-31 at halftime.

In the second half, Bowie State narrowed its deficit to 45-35 before going on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 45-42 with 16:04 to go in the contest. The half saw five ties including four lead changes but after a dunk from Webb, Augusta hit a layup with 39 seconds left to regain the lead for good. An offensive foul by Bradshaw led to a pair free-throws for the Jag's and after a pair of 3-point attempts, BSU was unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 73-70. Bowie State capitalized on seven Augusta turnovers in the period, collecting 10 points off those turnovers.
