RICHMOND, Va. – The Bowie State women's basketball team fell 60-44 on the road in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play Thursday night inside Barco Stevens Hall. The loss dips the Bulldogs 10-10 overall and 8-5 in the conference while Virginia Union improves to 7-12 overall and 5-8 in league play.
The Bulldogs were led by freshman Anii Harris (Ellicott City, MD) in scoring with 16 points and four rebounds while freshman Katerra Myers (Burtonsville, MD) added 10 points and eight rebounds.
In the first quarter, the Bulldogs hit just 3-of-17 shots from the field (17-percent) while the Lady Panthers connected on 6-of-14 shots for 42-percent to take a 14-9 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Lady Panthers scored the first five points to start the second quarter, but the Bulldogs came roaring back cutting the deficit to three on a 11-4 run capped off by a pair of free throws from Harris. VUU responded with two free throws of their own, followed by a 3-pointer to take a 29-22 lead at halftime.
The Bulldogs had a productive offensive attack to start the second half, outscoring VUU 14-11 in the third quarter and closing the gap to four (40-36) heading into the fourth stanza. However, a 10-2 scoring spread in favor of VUU made it hard for Bowie State pull off a comeback as the Panthers was able to sustain their lead down the stretch.
Bowie State will return home on Saturday, Feb. 12 when the Bulldogs play host to Shaw for senior day. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in A.C. Jordan Arena.
