Bulldogs Drop Two Second Day of CIAA Round-Up

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Bowie State softball team (9-13-1, 1-3 CIAA) suffered a pair of losses day two of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs fell 9-6 to Fayetteville State and then 9-1 to Claflin in the nightcap.

Game One: Bowie State (6), Fayetteville State (9)

After a scoreless two innings, Bowie State took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The Broncos tallied two runs in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2 but BSU scored on a passed ball to take a 3-2 lead after four complete innings. FSU plated five runs in the fifth including a grand slam that provided the Broncos with a 7-3 lead. The Bulldogs gathered two runs on four hits in the bottom fifth but trailed Fayetteville State, 7-5 heading into the sixth.

Although the Bulldogs tried to narrow the deficit, scoring one run in the bottom seventh, it would not be enough as the Broncos stretched the advantage to 9-5 in the top seventh.

Senior Shanya Gordon (Elkridge, MD) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI while graduate senior Evelyn Buehlman (Ellicott City, MD) suffered the loss, throwing 1.2 innings of two-run ball.

Game Two: Bowie State (1), Claflin (9)

Both teams scored a run in the first inning but Claflin took a 2-1 advantage in the second on a single to center field. The Bulldogs went scoreless in the top of the third but the Lady Panthers groomed five runs on three hits to push its lead 7-1 before adding one in the fourth and fifth that ended the game five innings.

Graduate senior Aseyah Alexander (Silver Spring, MD) was 2-for-2 at the plate while Buehlman suffered the loss, dropping to 4-7 on the year.

Bowie State will wrap up the round-up with a pair of games against Winston-Salem State (9 a.m.) and Saint Augustine's (11:30 a.m.).
