BOWIE, Md. – The No. 3 seeded Bowie State softball team pulled out an entertaining win over Virginia State University (20-14) in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Semifinal and elimination game Saturday afternoon at RF&P Park in Glen Allen, Va.
Bowie State (25-19-1) will now face the No. 1 seed Claflin (20-13) in the championship game at 2 p.m.
The Bulldogs used a late rally to come-from-behind and take down the No. 2 seeded Trojans as BSU had lost three straight to VSU prior to today's game. Down 4-1 with two outs in the seventh inning and runners on second and third, senior Shanya Gordon (Elkridge, MD) singled down the left line to pull the Bulldogs within one (4-3).
A batter later, freshman Lindsey George (Fayetteville, GA) reached on an error from VSU's shortstop that allowed Gordon to score – knotting the game at 4-even. After freshman Kayla Evans singled that pushed George to third, freshman Saniya Jones (Louisa, VA) singled for two RBIs as the Bulldogs added two more runs to take a 6-4 lead in the seventh.
George would save the day in a pitching relief effort, as the Trojans went three-and-out for the win capped off by a strikeout for George. She picked up her first save of the season and sixth overall win in the circle.
Gordon finished 2-of-4 with two RBIs and a runs scored while junior Akirra Pullen (Baltimore, MD) went 2-3, including a double and Jones aided 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
