BOWIE, Md. – The wait is finally over as the No. 8 Bowie State football team returns to the dog pound in its 2022 season. After a successful season last year, the Bulldogs will look to continue its winning ways when the No. 16 New Haven Chargers come to Bulldog Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 3 for a nationally ranked contest on the gridiron.

Game tickets are available here. General admission is $25 with youth age 5 and under FREE. Invited groups of 20 for ages 10-16 is FREE with a paid adult ticket however should be approved by Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation, Clyde Doughty, Jr. in advance.

THE SERIES
New Haven holds a 1-3 record in the all-time series with Bowie State, which dates back to 1993. The Bulldogs won last year's meeting in 2021 by the score of 21-13 in West Haven, Conn.
#8 BOWIE STATE AT A GLANCE
Bowie State was picked to repeat as Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) champions based on votes by the league's head coaches, sports information directors and conference administrators ahead of the 2022 season. The Bulldogs finished 12-2 overall in 2021 and went 7-0 against league opponents while reaching the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in program history, winning its third straight CIAA title and Northern Division title. Not only did the Bulldogs do it on the field but also in the classroom, winning the CIAA's Freddie Vaughan Highest Team GPA Academic Award in 2021.
Preseason has been busy for the Bulldogs; Bowie State has racked up seven top-25 appearances on preseason polls, including the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) at No. 8 – the highest ranking ever in program preseason history. BSU tabbed second in the HBCU Gameday DII/NAIA poll, fourth in the BOXTOROW HBCU Football Media Poll, sixth in the College Football America DII Poll, 12th in the D2Football.com Top-25 Poll, and most recently earning a first place vote in the first ever HBCU DII Coaches Poll powered by BOXTOROW Tuesday.
Amongst the team preseason rankings, several Bowie State players have garnered accolades this preseason including defensive lineman and redshirt senior Joshua Pryor (Baltimore, MD) who was named the Reese's Senior Bowl Watch List, Black College Football Player of the Year Watch List, D2Football.com Elite 100 Watch List and All-CIAA Preseason honors. Graduate senior Quinton Bobo (White Plains, MD) was named to the BOXTOROW All-American Preseason Team, College Football America DII All-Preseason Team, Black College Football Player of the Year Watch List and the D2Football.com Elite 100 Watch List.
As for Raymond Boone, the Landover, Md., native earned a nod on the D2Football.com Elite 100 Watch List and Black College Football Player of the Year Watch List while graduate senior Mark Murphy (Seat Pleasant, MD) earned recognition on the D2Football.com Elite 100 Watch List.
Bowie State returns eight starters from a season ago, including four on offense and four on defense. The Bulldogs are led by interim head coach Kyle Jackson in his first season.
#16 NEW HAVEN AT A GLANCE
New Haven comes into the contest ranked No. 16 in the nation after finishing the 2021 season 14th in the final AFCA Coaches Poll. The Chargers finished 10-2 overall, winning the first Northeast-10 Conference title for the first time since 2012 and advancing to the NCAA DII regional semifinal for the second time in as many postseason appearances.
Notable returners for the Chargers is Khyon Fitzpatrick who led the team in total tackles (68), five interceptions and four quarterback hurries while Connor Degrenhardt threw for 2,122 yards on 166 pass completions and 18 touchdowns. Of Degrehardt's 18 touchdowns, nine were to Dev Holmes who posted 47 receptions for 869 yards while on the ground – Shamar Logan rushed for a second-best 474 yards on 110 carries and three touchdowns.
Chris Pincince who was the 2021 N-10 Coach of the Year enters his 10 season at the helm of the program.
