Women’s Volleyball to Begin Conference Play at Virginia State Thursday

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State women's volleyball will return to action Thursday, Sept. 15 when the Bulldogs travel to face the Trojans of Virginia State University for its Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opener. The match will begin at 6 p.m. from the VSU Multipurpose Center.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Last Timeout for Bowie State
For the first time since 2008, the Bulldogs start the season 2-1. The Bulldogs won straight sets (25-3, 25-6 and 25-9) over Trinity Tuesday, while hitting .400 from the floor, registering a match-high 10 kills in the opening set and a hitting percentage of .500.

Junior Lindsey Grossman (Albany, OR) led all scorers with six kills (.857), 13 assists and five services on the day while freshman Charity Harris (Brandywine, MD) tabbed a career-high and match high 12 service aces, four kills and a dig. Freshman Nadira Avery (Bowie, MD) and junior Neysha Washington (Winchesters, VA) posted six aces apiece in the winning effort.
 

The Bulldogs Stat Leaders
Graduate senior Jailyn Ivey (Bowie, MD) former VSU standout leads the Bulldogs in kills (23). Grossman is the number setter with 38 assists and Harris has a team-high 13 services – all in which came against Trinity (DC) on Tuesday. 

Washington and Grossman have 23 and 21 digs through the three matches played thus far while graduate senior Kendal Hoges (West Orange, NJ) has four blocks. BSU averages 7.9 kills per set, 6.7 assists, 4.7 service aces, 8.8 digs and 1.2 blocks per set.
 

Virginia State
The Trojans enter Thursday's match with a 1-3 home record this season – VSU is coming off a 3-1 (27-25, 25-8, 25-8, 25-11) setback to Charleston (WV) on Sept. 10. Alexis McNair led the effort with eight kills, Makenzy Johnson had 15 assists and both Kennedy Hoge and Johnson both recorded nine digs.

As a team, the Trojans are ranked sixth in the league with a hitting percentage of .115, their opponents are averaging .156 and 10.21 kills per set. VSU is nearly the same defensively – posting 13.17 digs per set while its opponents average 13.85 per set. Amaya Cooper leads the CIAA in total kills (89) but seventh in the hitting percentage category (.254). The Trojans assist leader is Johnson (187) and best defender is Najlaa Williams (155 digs).
