BOWIE, Md. – For the first time this season the Bowie State women's volleyball team came up short in a five-set match, losing to Saint Augustine's University on Saturday morning, 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 12-15) day one of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up hosted by Bowie State.
Graduate senior Jailyn Ivey (Bowie, MD) recorded a match-high 16 kills, 17 digs while graduate senior Kendal Hoges (West Orange, NJ), and junior Lindsey Grossman (Albany, OR) added seven kills apiece. Grossman posted a season-high 28 assists, 12 digs, seven service aces and a season-high four blocks. Junior Neysha Washington contributed 18 digs to round out the double-digit stats for the Bulldogs.
Bowie State and Saint Augustine's went back and forth in the first two sets but in the opening frame, the Falcons went on a 6-0 to pull close 23-20 to the Bulldogs before eventually trailing by one (23-22) on back-to-back errors by BSU. A serving error by the Falcons, followed by a kill from Hoges gave the Bulldogs the set one win and 1-0 lead.
In the second set, SAU held a 19-17 advantage late before the Bulldogs tacked on two straight to tie at 19-all after a service ace for junior Noel Snow (Mount Airy, MD). The Falcons broke the tie on a kill but BSU used a 6-3 run to earn the 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set featured an 8-3 lead in favor of the Bulldogs but the Falcons came flying back and stole the lead on a 6-0 run which ignited an 11-2 spurt and a 17-12 lead for SAU. Bowie State rallied back, scoring five unanswered points but the Falcons produced an 8-4 scoring advantage to win set three.
With a 2-1 lead, the Bulldogs got off to a hot start in the fourth set that included a 6-2 lead capped off by a kill from sophomore Kyznia Jessup (Woodbridge, VA). The set would tie six times before SAU outscored the Bulldogs 6-2 including back-to-back points for the set win and match tie.
Momentum carried for the Falcons in the fifth, they flocked for a 5-2 lead forcing BSU to call a timeout. Out of the timeout, SAU scored two more before the Bulldogs snapped the scoring drought with back-to-back errors by the Falcons. However, the Bulldogs could not get over the hump down the stretch despite closing the gap to one (10-9), the Falcons maintained control and was able to seal the deal thanks to a pair of miscues by the Bulldogs for the 3-2 set win.
Bowie State will return to action Sunday, Sept. 25 with a 9 am match against Johnson C. Smith and then a 3 pm match with Winston-Salem State. Both matches will be in A.C. Jordan Arena.
