Women’s Volleyball and Virginia Union to Tangle Thursday in McKeldin

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State women's volleyball team will look for its third-straight conference win on Thursday, Sept. 29 for the first time since 2017 when the Bulldogs welcome Virginia Union to McKeldin Gymnasium.

The Series
Since 2008, Bowie State has only one four matches against the Lady Panthers in the last 27 matchups. VUU has won the last 22 matches including a 3-0 (20-25, 16-25, and 18-25) on Oct. 21, 2021.
 

Bowie State
The Bulldogs are 5-4 overall and 2-2 in league action, coming off a 2-1 performance in the CIAA volleyball round-up last weekend. Bowie State suffered a 3-2 defeat to Saint Augustine's but was able to bounce back with two hard fought victories over Johnson C. Smith (3-1) and Winston-Salem State (3-2) Sunday, Sept. 25. The victory against the Rams of WSSU snapped an 11-match losing skid while the win against the Golden Bulls snapped a five-match losing skid.

In the winning effort, junior Lindsey Grossman (Albany, OR) recorded two triple doubles – the first player in program history to do so in recent years. Against JCSU, she tallied 11 kills, 12 digs and 26 assists while against WSSU, she turned in a season-high 16 kills, 10 digs and a season-high 31 assists.

Additionally, the Bulldogs did get its offensive leader back in graduate senior Jailyn Ivey (Bowie, MD) who combined for 36 kills and 44 digs. Ivey and Grossman have combined for 117 kills, respectively. Junior Neysha Washington (Winchester, VA) is the top defender for BSU (121 digs), she was named this week's CIAA defensive player of the week.


Virginia Union
VUU went 3-0 at the round up in Bowie, Md. The Lady Panthers defeated Winston-Salem State (3-2), Saint Augustine's (3-0) and Johnson C. Smith (3-0). Amilex Lopez-Ayala leads the team in kills (89), Ashleey Franklin is the top setter (253) and defender with 89 digs while Jade Lane has 17 blocks on the season and Maysun Creery has 27 service aces. The Lady Panthers are 6-5 overall and 3-2 in league play.

The Bulldogs travel to Elizabeth City State on Oct. 2 and Shaw on Oct. 3 before the last CIAA round-up on Oct. 8-9 in Raleigh, N.C.
