ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – A shorthanded Bowie State men's basketball team erased a 15-point first half deficit to push the game to overtime, but Elizabeth City State (8-10, 3-5 CIAA) came away victorious in a battle between the Bulldogs and Vikings in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division action Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs (5-15, 3-5 CIAA) had two players score in double figures, led by junior Anthony Carpenter (Reisterstown, MD), who had 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Freshman Warren Mouganda (Bowie, MD) added 14 points, six rebounds and two steals and junior Joel Webb (Forestville, MD) added eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Bowie State out-rebounded Elizabeth City State 60-56 in Wednesday's game, led by Webb's 13 boards. The Bulldogs also grabbed 24 offensive rebounds and scored 22 second chance points.
BSU's defense was effective at taking away the ball, forcing 15 Viking turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. Carpenter's three steals led the way individually for the Bulldogs.
How It Happened
After falling behind 19-4, BSU went on a 9-0 run with 11:58 left in the first half to narrow its deficit to 19-13. The Bulldogs then closed the rest of the gap and grabbed a 33-30 lead heading into halftime. Bowie State capitalized on seven ECSU turnovers in the period, turning them into nine points on the other end of the floor.
The Vikings proceeded to take a 59-52 lead before Bowie State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Webb's layup, to even the score at 59 all with three seconds to go in the contest, Neither team was able to finish the game in regulation and the contest headed to overtime tied at 59-59. Webb's shot sent the contest to an extra period with just three seconds left. Bowie State took care of business in the paint, recording 20 of its 26 points in the lane.
Elizabeth City State then took control in overtime outscoring the Bulldogs, 12-6 for the 71-65 win.
