BOWIE, MD -- Redshirt sophomore Katerra Myers (Burtonsville, MD) pulled down 13 rebounds and sophomore Saniha Jackson (Ellicott City, MD) added 10 more, as the Bowie State women's basketball team (7-6, 3-1 CIAA) defeated the visiting Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons, 64-54 Thursday night inside A.C. Jordan Arena.
Myers and Jackson's fantastic rebounding performances led the Bulldogs in the contest. Myers tacked on five points and Jackson added 16 points and two steals. Sophomore Anii Harris (Ellicott City, MD) also helped out with 11 points, six rebounds and three steals.
BSU grabbed 52 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to the Lady Falcons' 31, led by Myers' 13 boards. The Bulldogs also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 27 rebounds into 16 second chance points.
The Bulldogs defense held SAU to only 40-percent shooting from the field. The Falcons did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with nine offensive rebounds and managed four second chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 3-0, Bowie State went on a 9-0 run with 8:47 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Jackson, to take a 9-3 lead. The Bulldogs then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 20-14 advantage. BSU did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 20 points close to the basket.
The Bulldogs could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 33-30.
The Lady Falcons continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 38-34 advantage before BSU went on a 16-0 run, punctuated by a basket from graduate senior Jazmyne Scott (Brooklyn, MD), to grab a 50-38 lead with 1:57 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, SAU had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Bulldogs still entered the fourth quarter with a 54-43 edge. BSU played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 24 points in the paint in route to the victory.
