BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State women's basketball team out-rebounded the Claflin Lady Panthers (9-4, 3-2 CIAA) 38-36 on the way to a 63-53 win at home Saturday afternoon inside A.C. Jordan Arena in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action.
The Bulldogs (8-6, 4-1CIAA) had three players score in double figures, led by Katerra Myers (Burtonsville, MD), who had 15 points and eight rebounds. Anii Harris (Ellicott City, MD) tacked on 12 points and four steals and Saniha Jackson (Ellicott City, MD) chipped in as well with 10 points.
Of the Bulldogs 38 rebounds, Myers' led the way with eight boards. BSU also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 17 rebounds into 15 second chance points.
The Bowie State defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 22 the Lady Panthers turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 21 points on the other end of the floor. Harris' four steals led the way individually for the Bulldogs.
How It Happened
After falling behind 4-2, Bowie State went on an 8-0 run with 7:09 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Myers, to take a 10-4 lead. The Bulldogs then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 10-5 advantage. Bowie State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring six of its 10 points close to the basket.
The Lady Panthers rallied to take a 25-21 lead before BSU went on a 5-0 run starting at the 1:10 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Myers, to take a 26-25 lead, a score that would hold until halftime.
Claflin then took a 37-29 lead following intermission before Bowie State went on a 13-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Harris, to grab a 42-37 lead with 1:44 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lady Panthers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Bulldogs still entered the fourth quarter with a 42-39 edge. Bowie State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 16 total points.
The Lady Panthers proceeded to take a 49-47 lead before the Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run to seize a 59-49 lead with 1:14 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 63-53 win.
