Bulldogs Hang Tight Before Falling to No. 24 Claflin, 77-75

BOWIE, MD --The Bowie State men's basketball team got a 26-point performance from the bench and hung tight with No. 24 Claflin before falling, 77-75 Saturday afternoon in a nationally televised game inside A.C. Jordan Arena in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action.

The Bulldogs (4-13, 2-3 CIAA) had four players score in double figures, led by Quinton Drayton (Bowie, MD), who had 16 points. Warren Mouganda (Bowie, MD) tacked on 14 points from the bench and Kyree Freeman-Davis (Bowie, MD) helped out with 13 points.

Bowie State out-rebounded Claflin (12-1, 4-1 CIAA) 37-35 in Saturday's game, led by Joel Webb's (Forestville, MD) 10 boards. The Bulldogs also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and scored 17 second chance points.

How It Happened

Bowie State struggled out of the gate, trailing 13-3 in the first five minutes. The Panthers would lead by as many as 10 points before the Bulldogs cut the deficit to single digits on back-to-back layups. BSU trailed 37-32 at halftime.

After intermission, BSU kept the Panthers from increasing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Myles Anderson's (Lanham, MD) jumper, to seize a 55-54 lead with 8:09 to go in the contest. No. 24 Claflin re-asserted control, outscoring the Bulldogs 23-20 the rest of the way to hand BSU the 77-75 loss. Bowie State made the most of six offensive rebounds to tack on 12 second chance points out of 43 total in the period.

» Webb notched a double-double for the Bulldogs with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
» The Bulldogs shot well from three point range, knocking down seven of 16 long range attempts.
» The Bowie State bench came alive by scoring 26 points to its scoring output.
» Bowie State lost despite a 37-35 rebounding advantage.
» Bowie State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 14 offensive boards in the game.
»  Drayton led the Bulldogs with a game-high 16 points.
» Bowie State got a game-high 10 rebounds from Webb.
