Bowie State Football Hosts Elizabeth City State for Senior Day

BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State football team (4-4, 3-3) will welcome Elizabeth City State to Bulldog Stadium for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division match up on Saturday, Oct.28 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Bulldog Sports Network with Evan Johnson and Jayden Clyne on the call. Additionally, live stats will be available.

CLEAR BAG POLICY
Fans will only be able to carry the following style and size bag into the stadium all of which are subject to search.

• Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12"
• One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar)
• Small clutch bags, measuring 4.5" x 6.5" with or without a handle or strap
• All other bags will not be permitted. A list of prohibited bags includes but is not limited to: purses, backpacks, drawstring bags that are not clear, briefcases, coolers, fanny packs, luggage, computer bags, camera bags, binocular cases, and diaper bags. Guests are encouraged to return unauthorized items to their vehicles. Bowie State University cannot safeguard items that are not permitted into the stadium.

HOW TO WATCH

Saturday's game will be televised live on the Bulldog Sports Network with Evan Johnson (play-by-play) and Jayden Clyne (analyst) on the action. Fans can also log on to BSUBulldogs.com and click "Gameday Central" which will prompt viewers to the Bulldogs Sports Network. Live stats will also be available under "Gameday Central" for all home football contests.

GAME PROMOTION
As their careers near completion, we will celebrate our 2023 senior class prior to the game against Elizabeth City State. At halftime, Bowie State will honor the Spring 2023 Dean's List recipients. It will also be a family weekend as all families of Bowie State students are encouraged to attend. 

A WIN OVER ELIZABETH CITY STATE WOULD...
• Improve Bowie State's conference record to 4-3 overall.
• Extend win streak to two-straight.
• Second win for head coach Kyle Jackson against Elizabeth City State.
• Extend active win streak to 10 games against ECSU.
• Improve to 6-1 at home against the Vikings since 2010.
• Improve all-time record to 24-16 overall and in CIAA.

INSIDE THE SERIES
Saturday's game will mark the 40th meeting between Elizabeth City State and Bowie State in program history. The Bulldogs enter Saturday's game on a nine game winning streak against ECSU, including a 36-29 win at Elizabeth City State last season. BSU is coming off a 40-11 road win over Bluefield State last weekend, picking up its first win in the Northern Division for 2023. Meanwhile the Vikings are coming off a upset victory at Virginia State, 17-16 on Saturday. The win snapped the Trojans winning streak at seven-straight and was also credited as the first win over a ranked opponent in 15 years for the ECSU program.

HOME SWEET HOME
Bowie State has recorded a 37-10 record at home in Bulldog Stadium since 2013 and in the last 10 seasons. Of those last 10 seasons, the Bulldogs have had three seasons where they've went undefeated at home (6-0 in 2021, 4-0 in 2018 and 4-0 in 2015). It wasn't until last season where the Bulldogs had its 23-game win-streak at home snapped by Virginia Union on Oct. 15, 2022. With the loss to Virginia State on homecoming, the Bulldogs will look to get back into the win column against Elizabeth City State for its home finale and 2023 home slate.

BULLDOGS DEFENSE RANKED IN NATION
Bowie State's defense rank 18th in Division II for third down conversion percentage (defense) at.290 and dropped to 20th in red zone defense (.640) after being. BSU moved back into the rankings for total defense this week at No. 39 (304.5) and moved out of the rankings for total defense. The Bulldogs are in the top-30 for defensive TD's, tied for 26th with 2 on the season.

THE JACKSON ERA
The 2023 season is the first official season for first-year head coach Kyle Jackson. Jackson was officially named the 10th head football coach in Bulldog history on Jan. 23, 2023. The decision followed Jackson after serving in the role as interim in the 2022 season, where he led the team to a 6-4 record and eight players earned CIAA All-Conference honors, with Joshua Pryor being named the 2021 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year and five First Team All-CIAA selections. Additionally, Pryor and Jordan Griffin were both selected First Team and Second Team All Super Region Two honorees. Jackson also had five Bulldogs participate in the second Annual Black College Football HBCU Legacy Bowl in New Orleans. Jackson has compiled a record of 10-8 overall and 8-6 in CIAA action entering Saturday's home finale.

CIAA WEEKLY HONORS
Bowie State's Jordan Morse and Jadon Carter were named this week's Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Football Players of the Week announced by the league office Monday afternoon. Morse was named this week's quarterback of the week while Carter was named the defensive back of the week - both first for the two Bulldogs this season. 

Bowie State had five different Bulldogs score a touchdown in the win at Bluefield State led by Morse who scored two TD's. Morse led all Bulldogs rushers with 60 yards and two touchdowns in the contest, picking up six yards per carry. Additionally, the Clarksburg, Md., native completed 13 passes for 177 yards. The contest was Morse first career start at quarterback for 2023. Carter led BSU defensively with a pick six worth 36-yards in the second quarter that extended the Bulldogs lead to 13-0. The Bryans Road, Md., native finished with two tackles to go along with the pick six. He leads the Bulldogs in interceptions with three on the season.

BACK ON TRACK 
The Bulldogs snapped a three game losing skid last weekend when Bowie State defeated Bluefield State, 40-11 at Mitchell Stadium. Five different Bulldogs scored touchdowns led by Morse. The contest was the first-every meeting between the two teams. The Bulldogs improved to 4-4 on the year and 3-3 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play, the win also snapped a three game losing skid for BSU while the Big Blues fell to 1-6 and 0-6 in league action.

Morse led all Bulldogs rushers with 60 yards and two touchdowns in the contest, picking up six yards per carry. Carleton Stewart also added 48 yards and one touchdown on the ground and Keshane Hinckley reeled in seven catches for 78 yards. Jadon Carter led the Bowie State defensive effort, recording one interception while Devin Williams added four tackles, one interception, and two pass breakups, followed by Hasan Mosley with three tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss, and one interception in the win. The Bulldogs won the turnover battle in Saturday's game, forcing four turnovers while coughing the ball up one time, with BSU turning those takeaways into 19 points. Bowie State converted on 55.6 percent of third-down attempts on the day.

Bowie State's defense limited Bluefield State's offense, allowing 195 total yards. Additionally, the Bulldogs pestered the B-State's passing attack all game long, piling up six sacks and adding four interceptions. BSU took care of business in the red zone, scoring five times on five trips inside Bluefield State's 20-yard line, with all of those scores being touchdowns.

HINCKLEY ON THE BLACK COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME WATCHLIST 
Bowie State wide receiver Keshane Hinckley was officially announced as one of the names on the official watch list of the 2023 Black College Football Player of the Year Watchlist, the Black College Football Hall of Fame announced in July. The Award is presented annually to the most outstanding football player from a Historically Black College & University. Hinckley is one of 11 student-athletes listed from the CIAA. The Laurel, Md., native led Bowie State and the CIAA in total receptions (56) in 2022. He registered a team-high (686) receiving yards (2nd in the CIAA) and a team-high (5) TDs last season. Four finalists will be unveiled after the season. The winner of the Black College Football Player of the Year Award, which will be announced during halftime of the 2024 Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl, will be presented with the Deacon Jones Trophy. The Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl takes place on Saturday, February 24, 2024 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The game will be broadcast live on NFL Network.

SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
Elizabeth City State is 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the CIAA entering Saturday's contest. The highlight of the Vikings season may have been last weekend as ECSU defeated a very good Virginia State team at Rogers Stadium led by a running game that produced 162 yards, 17 first downs in which 10 were from the run game. The Vikings held a 17-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter and despite the Trojans scoring nine points, VSU missed the point after attempt that sealed the win for Elizabeth City State. Zechariah Adams-Duckson recorded 32 carries for 136 yards while Donoven Davenpoint threw 11 passes for 142 yards and a TD. ECSU ranks ninth in the CIAA in scoring (15.0), while allowing 20.4 points from its opponents (5th in CIAA). The Vikings are top-5 in the league in rushing, averaging 145.6 yards per game (3rd in CIAA) but through the air, ECSU ranks ninth, posting 142.3 yards per outing.

WHAT'S NEXT
Bowie State will close out its 2023 campaign on the road at rival Lincoln (PA) for a division matchup on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. from the LU Athletics Stadium. The Bulldogs owns an all-time record of 13-0 against the Lions.
