SHIPPENSBURG, PA -- The Bowie State women's basketball team got a 21-point showing from the bench, but fell 66-57 to the Mansfield Mountaineers (1-0) at Friday.
Anii Harris led the Bulldogs (0-1) with 23 points and five steals. Jayla Irvin also added eight points and Robyn Howard chipped in as well with five points, six rebounds and three steals.
Katerra Myers pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Bowie State, grabbing 18 boards and turning them into 12 second chance points.The Bowie State defense caused its share of mistakes in Friday's game, forcing 27 Mansfield turnovers while committing 18. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Harris' five steals led the way individually for the Bulldogs.
How It Happened
After falling behind 8-0, Bowie State went on a 6-0 run with 6:23 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Mia Smith, to narrow its deficit to 8-6. Mansfield answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Bulldogs down 17-14 entering the second quarter.
Mansfield kept adding to that lead, building a 22-16 advantage before BSU went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a three from Tsion Smith, to take a 24-22 lead. The Mountaineers then came roaring back to take a 27-24 lead heading into halftime.
BSU came out of halftime on fire, going on an 8-0 run to grab a 32-27 lead with 8:30 to go in the third. Mansfield (PA) responded to seize a 49-39 lead entering the fourth quarter. Bowie State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 15 total points.
Mansfield kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 66-52 advantage before BSU went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Smith's three, to shrink the deficit to 66-57 with 12 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Bowie State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring nine of its 18 total points.

Bowie State will continue its road stand when the Bulldogs travel to Wilmington, Del., to take on Wilmington in a nonconference battle on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m.
