BOWIE, MD --The Bowie State women's basketball team hit 6-of-14 attempts from beyond the arc, shooting 42.9-percent from deep in a 58-38 win against the Winston-Salem State Rams at home Thursday inside A.C. Jordan Arena in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division action.
BSU's defense held Winston-Salem shooters to just 28.6-percent from the field, the Rams did not make a 3-pointer in the contest. Bowie State took advantage of five Winston-Salem turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
The Bulldogs (7-3, 2-1 CIAA) had three players score in double figures, led by Katerra Myers, who had 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. Tsion Smith added 12 points off of the bench and Anii Harris chipped in as well with 11 points and two blocks. Harris pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Bowie State, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into 10 second chance points.
How It Happened
BSU started out the scoring by going on an 8-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Jayla Irvin, to take an early lead with 5:29 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 10-1 advantage. Bowie State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 10 points close to the basket.
Bowie State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 9:15 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Myers, to increase its lead to 16-1. The Rams cut into that lead, but the Bulldogs still enjoyed a 24-12 advantage heading into halftime. The Bulldogs was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 14 points.
BSU continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a three from Smith, to expand its lead further to 42-22 with 46 seconds to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Rams had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Bulldogs still entered the fourth quarter with a 42-24 edge. BSU knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 18 total points.
Bowie State kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 56-36 with 1:46 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 58-38 win.
