GAME 1 | Bowie State 9, Virginia State 1
BOWIE, MD -- Freshman Trinity Mizelle and sophomore Jayla Hill each racked up two extra base hits to help propel the Bowie State Bulldogs past the Virginia State Trojans 9-1 on Sunday for Senior Day at the BSU Softball Field.
Prior to the first pitch, Bowie State recognized five seniors first baseman Brittany Brewer, catcher Breanna Harvey, shortstop Aseyah Alexander, outfielder Shanya Gordon and outfielder Taylor Skinner.
Junior Akirra Pullen (9-5) got the win for Bowie State (27-11,10-0 CIAA). The right-hander went five innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing one walk and striking out two.
Pullen's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-3 day, and included two doubles and an RBI. Hill made her contribution with two doubles and two RBI, part of a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Mizelle also helped out for the Bulldogs, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a triple and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Bowie State plated two runs off of Virginia State pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Hill.
The Bulldogs then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the third inning after the Trojans cut it to 2-1. BSU scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run triple from Mizelle, which brought the score to 5-1 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Bowie State held Virginia State without a run before expanding their lead to 8-1 the following inning.
BSU held the Trojans scoreless before their offense got things rolling the next inning. Freshman Alaysia Ross crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Bulldogs, bringing the score to 9-1 in favor of Bowie State. The score remained 9-1 for the rest of the game, as the Bulldogs coasted to the win.
