Women's Volleyball Gears Up for Tournament at West Virginia Wesleyan

BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State women's volleyball team will travel to Buckhannon, WV on Friday, Sept. 15 to compete in the Bobcat Tournament hosted by West Virginia Wesleyan in the Rockefeller Center. The Bulldogs will face Indianapolis and Lock Haven on at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday while on Saturday, BSU will take on West Virginia Wesleyan at 11:30 a.m. and Glenville State at 2 p.m.

Last Timeout
Bowie State (1-6) picked up its first win of 2023 on Tuesday when the Bulldogs played host to Virginia Lynchburg, 3-0. Four different Bulldogs recorded a team-high four kills (Dumebi OdiongMelisa AnaciusJanee Lewis and Marissa Robinson) and they all recorded a hitting percentage of 1.000. Bracey Gross led the team with five kills and three Bulldogs recorded a block.

Players to Watch
Despite a very young roster, the Bulldogs have been led by Madison Brinson with 31 kills, while Scott is the teams assist leader (84) and Ayana Johnson has a team-best 39 digs. Nina Edwards is the team's best blocker with 18 on the year while both Gross and Scott have registered eight services aces apiece. 

The Opponents
Indianapolis is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and is currently 6-2, riding a two-match win-streak. The Hounds are coming off 3-1 weekend at its home tournament last weekend. Indianapolis split day one with Notre Dame, winning 3-0 but falling 3-1 to Florida Southern. The Hounds defeated Ashland (3-2) and Thomas More (3-0). Sophia Parlanti is the top attacker with 101 kills, Claire Morris has 292 assists and Ellie Spang has a team-high 112 digs.

The Bald Eagles are 2-1 entering this weekend's tournament. Lock Haven is 2-1 overall led by Emma Kelly with 27 kills, Madison Eckley with 36 digs and Kelly Gaston with 107 assists. LHU is coming off a 3-0 win over Salem on the road, prior to that win, the Bald Eagles went 1-1 in the Saint Rose Tri-Match. Lock Haven is a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

West Virginia Wesleyan is 2-4 overall, looking to snap a two-match losing skid after falling to both West Chester (3-2) and Pitt-Johnstown (3-0) last timeout. The Bobcats team leaders are Emily Denison (31 kills), Sarah McCall (168 assists), Autumn Molenhouse (78 digs), WVW is a member of the Mountain East Conference (MEC).

Also a member of MEC conference, Glenville State is 2-5 overall, coming off a split with West Virginia Teach (3-2, 0-3). The Pioneers leaders consist of Katarzyna Niderla with 68 kills, Sarah Grainger with 179 assists and Sydney Goodrich with 73 digs.

Bowie State will travel to Baltimore, Md., to face Morgan State on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. at the Hill Field House.
