Bowie State Set For Second Straight at Bulldog Stadium, Host St. Augustine's Saturday

Saturday's game is themed as Health Awareness Day

BOWIE, MD -- Bowie State concludes a two-game homestand when the Bulldogs host Saint Augustine's Saturday at Bulldog Stadium in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division play. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. ET.

CLEAR BAG POLICY
Fans will only be able to carry the following style and size bag into the stadium all of which are subject to search.

• Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12"

• One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar)

• Small clutch bags, measuring 4.5" x 6.5" with or without a handle or strap

• All other bags will not be permitted. A list of prohibited bags includes but is not limited to: purses, backpacks, drawstring bags that are not clear, briefcases, coolers, fanny packs, luggage, computer bags, camera bags, binocular cases, and diaper bags. Guests are encouraged to return unauthorized items to their vehicles. Bowie State University cannot safeguard items that are not permitted into the stadium.

HOW TO WATCH
Saturday's game will be televised live on the Bulldog Sports Network with Evan Johnson (play-by-play) and Jayden Clyne (analyst) on the action. Fans can also log on to BSUBulldogs.com and click "Gameday Central" which will prompt viewers to the Bulldogs Sports Network. Live stats will also be available under "Gameday Central" for all home football contests.

GAMEDAY PROMOTION
The Bulldogs will host the Falcons of Saint Augustine's for Health Awareness Day. Bowie State will help raise awareness about all health conditions with a emphasis on Breast Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Mental Wellness and self care while understanding health issues as well as mobilize support for action, from the local community to as large as the national and international stage. 

INSIDE THE SERIES
Saturday's game will mark the eighth meeting between St. Augustine's and Bowie State since 2002. The Bulldogs own a 5-2 all-time record against the Falcons dating back to the first meeting which was held in Raleigh, N.C. on Sept. 21 - 21 years ago by the score of 34-2. At Bulldog Stadium, BSU is 2-1 against the Falcons and have won the last three outings over SAU including last year's 36-20 road victory. 

LAST TIMEOUT
Behind an impressive defensive effort that kept the Shaw ground attack to 72 rushing yards, the Bowie State Bulldogs took down the Bears 21-7 at home Saturday afternoon in its home opener at Bulldog Stadium.The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play, while the Bears fell to 0-3 and 0-1 in the league.

Senior Carleton Stewart totaled 55 yards to lead the Bulldogs' ground attack in the game, picking up 6.9 yards per carry along the way while redshirt sophomore Asa Williams also tacked on 22 yards on the ground, picking up 5.5 yards per carry. Senior James McNeill, III reeled in six catches for 69 yards and two scores while graduate senior Keshane Hinckley got in on the action in the passing game as well, hauling in five balls for 64 yards. Sophomore Khalil Glover showed out for the Bowie State defense, totaling seven tackles and a half of sack while redshirt junior Devin Williams added six tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss, one interception, and two pass breakups and redshirt sophomore Jadon Carter had one interception in the win.

The Bulldogs won the turnover battle in Saturday's game, forcing three turnovers while coughing the ball up one time.

Defensively, Bowie State held up fairly well against the Shaw offensive attack, holding the Bears to 235 total yards. The Bulldogs defense disrupted the Shaw passing game on the way to pulling down two interceptions and breaking up five Bears passes.

HOME SWEET HOME
Bowie State has recorded a 36-9 record at home in Bulldog Stadium since 2013 and in the last 10 seasons. Of those last 10 seasons, the Bulldogs have had three seasons where they've went undefeated at home (6-0 in 2021, 4-0 in 2018 and 4-0 in 2015). It wasn't until last season where the Bulldogs had its 23-game win-streak at home snapped by Virginia Union on Oct. 15, 2022. This will be the second straight home game for Bowie State in 2023, the Bulldogs are 1-1 against SAU since 2012.

HBCU D2 COACHES POLL
Bowie State football remained No. 5 in this week's HBCU D2 Coaches Poll announced by BOXTOROW. The Bulldogs started the preseason poll at No. 6 before the season opener at Delaware State and moved up to No. 4 week 2 but after the lost to nationally ranked Davenport, the Bulldogs has remained at No. 5 for the second straight week.

HINCKLEY ON THE BLACK COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME WATCHLIST 
Bowie State wide receiver Keshane Hinckley was officially announced as one of the names on the official watch list of the 2023 Black College Football Player of the Year Watchlist, the Black College Football Hall of Fame announced in July. The Award is presented annually to the most outstanding football player from a Historically Black College & University. Hinckley is one of 11 student-athletes listed from the CIAA. The Laurel, Md., native led Bowie State and the CIAA in total receptions (56) in 2022. He registered a team-high (686) receiving yards (2nd in the CIAA) and a team-high (5) TDs last season. Four finalists will be unveiled after the season. The winner of the Black College Football Player of the Year Award, which will be announced during halftime of the 2024 Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl, will be presented with the Deacon Jones Trophy. The Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl takes place on Saturday, February 24, 2024 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The game will be broadcast live on NFL Network.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Jenkins has already thrown for over 600-yards in three games combined, including a whopping 350 yards at Davenport last weekend. The Baltimore, Md., native has completed 68 passes on 106 attempts for 695 yards and three TD's as the starting quarterback for Bowie State while the receiving unit has been led by both Ferguson and Hinckley who have combined for 459 yards, 32 receptions and a touchdown. However, James McNeill, III leads the receiving core in total touchdowns with three including two against Shaw last weekend.

Defensively, Williams has a 16 tackles to lead Bowie State, while Mychale Salahuddin has recorded 15 tackles and Hasan Mosley posted 14 tackles. The sack leader for the Bulldogs is Uvel Paul, Jr. with three for 28 yards and there both Devin Williams and Jadon Carter have recorded an interception each against Shaw.

CIAA PRESEASON POLL
Bowie State football has been selected to finish second in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), as announced by the league office at the annual CIAA football media day in July. The All-CIAA Preseason Team was voted upon by the CIAA Football Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors. Of the 18 returning players from 2022, BSU had a pair of Bulldogs named to the CIAA Preseason Team including Keshane Hinckley and Jadon Carter. Amongst the CIAA Divisions, Bowie State was projected to win the Northern Division while Fayetteville State, the 2022 defending champions was picked atop in the overall preseason poll and Southern Division.

THE JACKSON ERA
The 2023 season will embark the first official season for first-year head coach Kyle Jackson. Jackson was officially named the 10th head football coach in Bulldog history on Jan. 23, 2023. The decision followed Jackson after serving in the role as interim in the 2022 season, where he led the team to a 6-4 record and eight players earned CIAA All-Conference honors, with Joshua Pryor being named the 2021 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year and five First Team All-CIAA selections. Additionally, Pryor and Jordan Griffin were both selected First Team and Second Team All Super Region Two honorees. Jackson also had five Bulldogs participate in the second Annual Black College Football HBCU Legacy Bowl in New Orleans.

SCOUTING THE FALCONS
It has been a tough start to the 2023 season for the Falcons of St. Augustine's as they have dropped each of its first three contests. In its season opener, SAU was handed a 45-7 setback at the hands of nationally ranked Lenoir-Rhyne. A week later, Elizabeth City State outscored the Falcons 13-0 in the Down East Football Classic, followed by a 55-15 loss to Virginia State in its home opener last weekend to drop to 0-3. SAU has struggled offensively and will have a tough test against BSU's defense. The Falcons have scored just 19 points in its three games and have averaged just 125 yards of total offense. The defense for St. Augustine's ranks 11th overall in the CIAA, allowing 37.7 points per game. Its opponents have combined for 767 rushing yards (225.0 per game), and 344 passing yards (114.67 per game). The Falcons are led by first year head coach Howard Feggins.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Bulldogs will travel to Salisbury, N.C. to face Livingstone on Sept. 30 at Alumni Memorial Stadium. The Blue Bears own a 18-14 all-time record against Bowie State dating back to the first meeting in 1973. BSU has won the last three meetings against LC including last year's 53-7 for homecoming on Oct. 1, 2022.
