Swan Earns 150th Career Win in Bowie State's 71-61 Victory Over Livingstone

SALISBURY, NC -- Bowie State women's basketball head coach Shadae Swan earned her 150th career win Thursday night, becoming the second-winningest coach in program history. The Bulldogs' Destiny Ryles scored 30 points to help lead Bowie State over the Livingstone Lady Blue Bears (3-9, 1-2 CIAA) 71-61 on the road in New Trent Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs (10-2, 4-0 CIAA) had three players score in double figures, led by Ryles, who had 30 points and four steals. Mia Smith tacked on 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals and Beulah Odiong chipped in as well with a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Led by Odiong's four offensive rebounds, BSU recorded 12 boards that resulted in 11 second-chance points. Bowie State's defense held LC to only 18.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 26.4 percent from the field.

How It Happened
After jumping out to a 3-2 advantage, BSU went on a 7-0 run with 8:08 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 10-2. The Bulldogs then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 21-12 advantage. Bowie State capitalized on 18 Livingstone turnovers in the period, turning them into 12 points on the other end of the floor.

The Bulldogs used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 38-25 edge.

Bowie State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kristin Sterling, to expand its lead further to 46-30 with 5:56 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lady Blue Bears had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Bulldogs still entered the fourth quarter with a 53-39 edge. BSU took advantage of 15 LC's turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points from takeaways.

The Blue Bears tied the game at 59-59 before BSU went on an 8-0 run to seize a 67-59 lead with 1:12 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 71-61 win.

» Odiong notched a double-double for the Bulldogs with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
» BSU held the Lady Blue Bears to only 26.4 percent shooting from the field.
» The Bulldogs never trailed after taking a 21-12 first-quarter lead.
» BSU had a stellar day defensively, holding LC to 19 percent from beyond the arc on 16 attempts.
» The Bulldogs got seven steals each from Odiong and Ayasha Thomas.
» BSU's defense forced 33 turnovers.
» The Bulldogs cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 12 offensive boards in the game.
» Ryles led the Bulldogs with a game-high 30 points.
» BSU got a team-high 12 rebounds from Odiong.
