BOWIE, MD --Bowie State Hoops got a 26-point showing from the bench but fell short 80-58 to the Claflin Panthers (5-4, 2-0 CIAA) at home Saturday inside of A.C Jordan Arena.
Elijah Davis led the Bulldogs (6-5, 0-1 CIAA) with nine points, four assists and four steals. Amare Wimbush also tacked on nine points, seven rebounds, and two blocks and Joseph Allen helped out with eight points and six rebounds off the bench.
BSU out-rebounded CLAF 35-32 in Saturday's game, paced by Wimbush's seven boards. The Bulldogs also pulled down 17 offensive rebounds and scored 21 second-chance points.
The Bowie State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 16 Claflin turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Davis' four steals led the way individually for the Bulldogs.
How It Happened
After falling behind 19-12, Bowie State went on a 9-0 run with 8:46 left in the first half to take a 21-19 lead. The Bulldogs then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 33-28.
Claflin kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 61-41 advantage before BSU went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Wimbush's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 61-46 with 8:23 to go in the contest. Claflin responded and outscored the Bulldogs the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 80-58. BSU took care of business in the paint, recording 16 of its 30 points in the lane.
