BOWIE, MD -- Caleb Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left on the clock to put the Bowie State men's basketball team ahead for good in a 79-78 win over the Bluefield State Big Blues at home Saturday afternoon inside A.C. Jordan Arena for Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division action and its home finale.
The Bulldogs (10-16, 5-10 CIAA, 4-4 North) had five players score in double figures, led by Warren Mouganda, who had 20 points, four assists and three steals. Anthony Carpenter added 15 points and six rebounds and Johnson helped out with 14 points. Joel Webb pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead the Bowie State offense which grabbed 10 boards and turned them into 14 second chance points. The Bulldogs got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for nine of its 33 total points.
BSU's defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 14 Bluefield State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Mouganda's three steals led the way individually for the Bulldogs.
How It Happened
Bowie State started out the scoring by going on an 8-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Mouganda, to take an early lead with 18:33 left in the first half. The Bulldogs then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 46-36 advantage. Bowie State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 24 of its 46 points close to the basket.
BSU kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 61-47 with 14:42 to go in the contest. The Big Blues narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bulldogs still held on for the 79-78 win.
