PETERSBURG, VA -- Anii Harris and Jayla Irvin combined to score 31 total points, but the Bowie State women's basketball team fell to the Virginia State Trojans (21-4, 12-4 CIAA, 6-3 North) 54-43 on the road Wednesday night inside the VSU Multipurpose Center during Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) division action.
The Bulldogs (13-13, 7-9 CIAA, 2-7 North) had two players score in double figures, led by Harris, who had 17 points. Irvin added 14 points and Robyn Howard added five points and two steals. BSU forced 18 VSU turnovers and turned those takeaways into 13 points on the other end of the floor.
How It Happened
BSU kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 11-7. Bowie State continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 23-12 halftime deficit.
Following halftime, the Bulldogs kept the Trojans from growing their lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Irvin, to trim its deficit to 33-27 with 22 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. BSU played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
Bowie State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 54-43.
