Bulldogs Suffer First Round Tournament Exit with 64-61 Loss to Winston-Salem State

BALTIMORE, MD --- Jayla Irvin led Bowie State women's basketball with 24 points and three steals and Anii Harris added 16 points, five assists and two steals but the Bulldog fell to the Winston-Salem State Rams 64-61 at CFG Bank Arena Monday in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament opening round.

Additionally, Katerra Myers helped out with nine points and six rebounds. Saniha Jackson's four rejections led the way defensively. The loss would conclude Bowie State's 2023-24 campaign at 13-14 overall.

How It Happened
After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, BSU went on a 5-0 run with 7:17 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Myers, to take a 7-2 lead. The Bulldogs then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 13-12 advantage. BSU capitalized on six Rams turnovers in the period, turning them into four points on the other end of the floor.

The Bulldogs could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 31-21.

After intermission, BSU cut its deficit to 40-35 before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Irvin, to grab a 43-40 lead with 1:31 to go in the third. The Rams then rallied to tie it at 45-45 heading into the fourth quarter. Bowie State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 24 points in the paint.

Winston-Salem State then snagged a 59-55 advantage before BSU responded by going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Beulah Odiong's jumper, to seize a 61-59 lead with 1:19 to go in the contest. Winston-Salem State re-asserted control, outscoring the Bulldogs 5-0 the rest of the way to a 64-61 loss.
