BLUEFIELD, WV -- Joel Webb scored 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting but the Bowie State men's basketball team fell to the Bluefield State Big Blues 77-73 on the road Saturday in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division action. The meeting was the first between the two teams since B-State rejoined the CIAA.
Webb added nine rebounds and two steals to his 22 point game to lead the Bulldogs (7-16, 2-10 CIAA, 1-4 North). Warren Mouganda helped out with 19 points and Caleb Johnson chipped in with seven points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
BSU out-rebounded Bluefield State 46-33 in Saturday's game, led by 11 boards from Anthony Carpenter. The Bulldogs also collected 20 offensive rebounds and scored 18 second chance points.
The Bulldogs defense forced 14 Bluefield State turnovers that turned into 12 points on the other end of the floor. Webb's two steals led the way individually for the Bulldogs.
How It Happened
After falling behind 16-4, Bowie State went on a 7-0 run with 13:58 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Mouganda, to narrow its deficit to 16-11. Bluefield State answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Bulldogs down 40-33 entering halftime.
B-State (7-15, 4-8 CIAA, 1-4 North kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 53-45 advantage before BSU went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Corey Barnes' layup, to even the score at 53 all with 12:51 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Big Blues outscored them 24-20 the rest of the way to hand Bowie State the 77-73 loss. Bowie State took care of business in the paint, recording 20 of its 40 points in the lane.
