Bulldogs Earn a Split On the Final Day of CIAA Round-Up

ELIZABETH CITY, NC --Bowie State softball team split their final two games of the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) Round-Up dropping game one against Fayetteville State 6-4 and winning game two against Claflin University 7-3 on Wednesday afternoon. 

GAME 1 |Fayetteville State 6, Bowie State 4
Akirra Pullen (4-9) started and took the loss in the circle for the Bulldogs (9-17, 4-1 CIAA).

Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by Jayla Hill, who went 2-for-3 on the day with two doubles and an RBI. Coreena Dunham furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Sydney Edmond also contributed for BSU, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 4-0, the Bulldogs first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. BSU got on the board thanks to Hill's RBI double with one out.

The Broncos (5-13, 1-3) expanded their lead to 6-1 before the Bulldogs offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the seventh. BSU scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from Dunham, which brought the score to 6-4 in favor of the Broncos. The ballgame ended with that seventh-inning rally falling short.

GAME NOTES
» The Bulldogs' power output was led by Hill, who compiled two extra-base hits in the ballgame.
» BSU's highest-scoring inning was the seventh when it pushed three runs across.
» The Bulldogs went 3-for-8 (.375) with runners in scoring position.
» BSU pitchers faced 31 FSU hitters in the game, allowing 11 ground balls and five fly balls.

GAME 2 | Claflin 3, Bowie State 7
It was a difficult day for Claflin pitchers, as the Bulldogs scored seven runs en route to a 7-3 victory over the Panthers (6-16, 2-3) on Wednesday.

Lindsey George (5-7) got the win for the Bulldogs (10-17, 5-1 CIAA). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on nine hits, allowing five walks and striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Dunham came across to score the lone run of the inning for BSU and get them on the board.

The Bulldogs lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the fourth trailing 3-1. The BSU offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of Jahkya Watkins, which brought the score to 5-3 in favor of the Bulldogs.

BSU held Claflin without a run before expanding their lead to 7-3 the following inning. The Bulldogs added two runs when a single from George scored Dunham and Pullen. The score remained 7-3 for the rest of the game, as BSU coasted to the win.

The Bulldogs will head on the road to Virginia for a pair of CIAA doubleheaders, as they are set to face Virginia State University on Friday, Apr. 5 at 1 p.m. in Ettrick, VA, and Virginia Union University on Saturday, Apr. 6 in Richmond, VA at 12 p.m.
